The gmatclub study plan post may be helpful to check out. It mentions a variety of resources, for example.

Quote:
took my first GMAT practice test and got a 530 ( 31 for both verbal and quant)

Person below went from a v31 to a v40 on a retake. They took a bit of tutoring (6hrs SA) but mention a variety of free resources/tips you might find helpful.

Hi. Welcome to GMAT Club.

Here is a topic I put together a month ago specifically for people who are just starting out: https://gmatclub.com/forum/brand-new-to ... 11381.html

Fyi - you will not learn anything in the starter kit from mba.com so don’t even waste your time or those questions. Save them for later.

Choose either target or Manhattan. Similar to how mixing two good wines together is not going to make a better wine, mixing multiple prep sources will only throw you off. For one, finishing all of the modules in the course is a slug. Many people have struggled with completing the entire course. Using multiple courses will only reinforce an idea that one is somehow deficient or not enough and therefore you should use two or three or four or five where as in reality one is more than enough.

Get the official guide. You need it regardless.

In terms of prep time, most people target or it’s recommended to target, about three or four months but the overall timeline also depends on what score you need. My post touches a little bit about what kind of improvement you can expect overtime.

BB.

Hi,

I just took my first GMAT practice test and got a 530 ( 31 for both verbal and quant), I took the test with 0 preparation and did it to set a baseline. I need to get to about a 710 to get into my program of choice. I have been reading around but the amount of resources are just far too many and I am clueless and left more confused about how to start preparing. Could someone please tell me what I should do to start off with ?

I have about 4.5 months to study and I also work full time so I am guessing that I could set aside 2 hours a day and weekends to study ( 15 hours a week to study)

Here is my thought process so far:

1. Go through the starter kit and solve all the problems and learn all the concepts
2. Get Target test prep and solve all modules
3. Manhattan guide book and the OG guide to round it up
4. Practice tests in the end

I am thinking that If I start by brushing up concepts then from there I can work towards finding out where I need to work on and where I am lacking. Then if I keep practicing that would be good enough to get me through ? Very lost would appreciate help.

Hi navyisland967.

The Target Test Prep GMAT course will take you well beyond "brushing up on the concepts." It will take you through the entire GMAT in an optimal order and provide practice along the way. So, when you're done with the course, you'll be ready to achieve your score goal.

You can see what I mean by signing up for the trial, which allows access to the entire course, and reviewing the course for yourself.

Hi navyisland967,

A 530 is a solid initial CAT score (the Average Score on the Official GMAT hovers around 550 most years). Many GMATers spend 3 months (or more) of consistent study time before they hit their 'peak' scores, so giving yourself 4.5 months of poential study time is also a smart choice. The 710 Score is approximately the 90th percentile, meaning that clearly most Test-takers never score that high on the Official Exam - but the GMAT is a consistent, predictable Test, so you CAN train to score at a higher level. When it comes to studying for the GMAT, there are a number of different study materials that you might choose to use - so the specific materials that would best fit YOUR needs will depend a great deal on your skills and goals.

I'd like to know a bit more about your timeline:
1) Are you planning to take the GMAT at a Test Center or through the At-home option?
2) When are you planning to apply to Business School and what Schools are you planning to apply to?
3) On this 1st CAT/mock, did you have to rush to finish any of the sections (and did you leave any questions unanswered?)?

GMAT assassins aren't born, they're made,
Rich
