I have completed my job with 2 years experience in IT field as SW engineer and I want to get into one of top 50 or top 30 B schools for mba i am hoping for a range in between 650 and 700 for gmat depending on my caliber and time i have got. i have gpa of 8.4 in B tech. Do i have a fair shot?

With two years of experience as a software engineer, you've built a strong foundation for an MBA. Your GPA sets you up well for a top B-school MBA. Aim for a higher GMAT score in your target range (650–700) to stand out, a higher score can significantly improve your application for the most competitive programs. Some schools might require the GRE too, so check each program. Showcase your achievements in IT to highlight your skills. Finally, use your application to show strong communication and teamwork. With a good GMAT score, research, and a compelling application, you've got a shot at a top B-school!

Jubinbiju ­- Broadly, assuming you'd have 3 years work-ex as of Sep 2025, you'd be on the lower side of the age/ work-ex of most Top-30 B-schools (check out the stats here).

Aiming for a strong GMAT (ideally 705 - 715+ GFE) would be ideal, as it can offset the work-ex angle to an extent. Another alternative is to apply next year after Building Your Profile for the top MBA programs.

Having said that, some more details can help assess your profile better:

1. Which undergrad university did you attend?

2. Which company are you working in, key achievements, any promotions(?) etc.? Anything on the Extracurriculars side?

3. What are your motivations for an MBA, and career goals post MBA?

If the above angles are strong, in addition to a good GMAT score, you could look at applying to this year. For some inspiration, check out the success-story deepdive of an Indian Male candidate with 2.5 years work-ex who got into USC Marshall MBA with scholarship

Jubinbiju Depends on the schools. The lower you target in terms of ranking, the better the odds for acceptance are, provided you demonstrate the desired level of maturity and clarity regarding post-MBA plans. However, applicants with 2 years of experience often face the challenge of being perceived as young and inexperienced, which could affect their admission chances. You must show you have gained years of experience with every incremental year at work. You need to unpack your experiences and reconstruct your stories to demonstrate that working on business-oriented projects in your current organization has equipped you with hands-on experience, experiential maturity, and the ability to contextualize business problems specific to your area of work better than many profiles who apply with similar age and experience.

Admissions officers have a weakness for applicants who are, in the well-traveled term, "passionate" to pursue their dreams. It is only human to respond to enthusiasm. The schools will use the essays to make an indirect read on the quality of your mind and thought process. As an SW engineer, do you think critically about the problems in your company or industry? Can you craft a compelling case that links your past, your goals, and respective T50 schools? What is your unique story?
