It's funny how my experience has been similar yet opposites. I'm helping my boss interview for interns and replacements, looking through resumes, etc... but most of it is because I've been pushing him to do so. He doesn't seem that worried at all, even though we will be severely short-handed when I leave with a few big projects going on concurrently. I guess I'll do my best to help him and the group out, but 2 more part-time weeks and I'm done! :)

I have been cruising for the last few months with little or no work, and I feel guilty as hell. Been convincing myself that I am not to blame entirely, as nobody seems to care about the project I was supposed to be working on. But I have kept a very low profile and if it continues for too long, it will impact my relationships with managers and co-workers..
Anyway, it was a tough choice between the money and freedom, so I took the middle path and gave my notice for May30th. It was a great 3.5 years here, and I wish I could end it on a more productive note

Can hardly wait for the next month and half....And I still have to decide on what I want to do in June and July :?:

haha mine's gonna be unusual too..
I started working at my current work-place right out of college and have been with them for around 5.5 yrs now.

My client, supervisor and HR folks have always known that I was going back to school and have been rooting for me all along.

So I call my HR person this morning and tell her about my admission. I even told her that she'd have to help me with the resignation since I've never written a resignation letter before  She told me what to do and that's what I'll be doing in a week or so.

Couldn't have asked for a smoother transition...

Just came back from a two week vacation. From my cell phone, I sent an email to my boss: "I am extending my vacation by three days. I'll be back in the office on Thursday."

What are they gonna do, fire me? I'm heading to Vegas for a few days with the bf before he starts his new job. When I get back to the office, I have 5 weeks of work left...and then I'm headed for 6 weeks of travels!

I like it!! Jealous too - had three spots I wanted to hit up before leaving (NYC, Miami, and Vegas) - only one I missed was Vegas.

Hey All,

I have possibly a unique situation. I have stock options that vest about two weeks before school starts. I currently live in a city far away from where I'm going to school an am trying to figure out if it would be worth it to stay working up to the vest date of these options or to move to the new city earlier to get acquainted and comfortable. The options would make a 5-digit dent on my expenses.

I suggest hoarding vacation time and making your last "official" day after the vesting, but use your vacation time to give yourself a break.

e.g. if the options vest the 10th of september, call september 14th your "last day" and Take vacation from september 1-14.
Be sure you will also have time to exercise them. Take into account any "blackout" periods, etc. Usually you are at least given acouple of months after leaving to exercise vested shares.

If you aren't able to do the above, then leave early - like next week. Nothing sucks more than missing a 5-figure payout by a week, so try to miss it by a few months and make yourself feel better by taking a cool vacation.

Moving 2 weeks before school is enough time to get settled. I am moving 10 days before school and I am moving from Europe to USA :). Just make sure you do a lot of research online before the move. You can do a lot of the necessary things online.

don't underestimate the time it takes to get you settled.

You won't have time for ANYTHING once you get to school - so think of everything you need to do before classes start:

Move your stuff in
Unpack
Get things you need for the new place
Do all the pre-term stuff - accounting or quant reviews or whatever
Make new friends, socialize
Relax, because it's about to get crazy

If you can do all that in 10 days - or do it in advance of moving - then go for it.

I plan to live my entire first year in a "half unpacked" mode..... I only have about 7-10 days to settle in. I think it should be enough, but if not - C'est la vie.

just realized that COBRA (the health insurance after you quit) is hella expensive! I may work a couple part time weeks in late June to extend my vacation until mid-July, so that get the 31 days before university health insurance kicks in (mid-August). Sigh...

$237 or so for an individual

yeah, that's cheap. people who don't have the benefit of employer-sponsored coverage or cobra pay around $750 a month in nys. a "cheaper" option is high-deductible coverage -- something like $250 a month. Deductibles range up to $5000.
