Its becoming harder not to slack off, still resisting pretty well though. However, because I took the severance I was offered, my last day isn't until the 29th of July :(

July 15th tentatively right now...I am collecting a paycheck into August with vacation. Subject to change based on our house. The only reason I am working this long is because of the money.

Although using the word work for what I do these days when I show up to the office is kind of unfair haha.

I'm outlasting river by one day. Official termination date is 7/16, but I have more vacation than I thought, so it's 20 hours this week, 10 hours next week, 0 hours during the July 4th week, and then roughly 10 hours a week for 2 more weeks until 7/16. Most of that time will be working from home too. Not a bad way to keep my health benefits going. :)

And river, I checked with COBRA (Ceridian), they confirmed that I have 60 days to retroactively enact COBRA from the date of termination. Yay! :)

you can retroactively enact cobra within 60 days, but that does not mean you can retroactively cover doctor visits. isnt it risky not to cobra? what if you have a mishap during those 60 days?

I just read:

"Bear in mind that if you visit a doctor during the period you initially waived COBRA, you will not be reimbursed for that claim even if you later decide to buy COBRA."

Re: For those matriculating... the Right Way to Leave Your Job? [#permalink]
well, that is the confusing part. I spoke with the COBRA plan operator today, and she said that at any point in those 60 days if I choose to elect, then it is retroactive from the date of termination or notification, whichever is later. If I visited doctors during that period (before I chose to elect), or had an emergency, I just need to save the receipts and send it in for reimbursement.

The article doesn't make as much sense, since it says that you can choose not to elect COBRA when you get the notification, but it doesn't say how many days you get after the notification before it's considered "waived". Do you get a week? Two weeks? or the full 60 days to decide? It makes no sense that you choose to "waive" it immediately after you get notification, since you can't instantly elect the second you get your mail.

And there's a few week period where you are waiting for the notification, what then? Based on the person I spoke with, you are covered and just need to get reimbursed (if you break a leg while waiting for COBRA to arrive). Based on this article, you're in limbo...

Anyway, I will also get the Tonik insurance (it's only $100/month) during the 1 month between end of company coverage and beginning of school coverage. It covers up to $5M, even though the deductible is high, it's more for catastrophic events.

im confused... and i think i will get screwed by this. i will have 62 days between the day i quit and the day my school coverage begins... so there will be 2 days past the 60 day limit. if i do elect cobra on the final 2 days, i will have to pay all the back premiums, which saves me nothing in the end.

dabots, yes, you are right. If you have 62 days between termination and school starting, you may be in trouble. Based on what I've heard and read though, it's 60 days from "notification or termination, whichever is later". So it might work out because you will get the notification a week or two after you terminate and your company sends info to your COBRA provider.

Of course, if you want to mitigate risk, I would just go get Tonik on the side.

Re: For those matriculating... the Right Way to Leave Your Job? [#permalink]
You all are making me horribly jealous! I'm a fall '09 applicant so I don't even know if I'm going to get in, and I HATE MY JOB, HATE MY BOSS, and all that goes with it.

Anyone on here that can offer me advice would be greatly appreciated:

BACKGROUND:

I was working for an elected official that chose to leave office to run for higher office and didn't get elected, so I was out of a job Jan '07. I had a semester left in law school so I took extra loans and didn't work from jan through October '07 after I got bar results that I had passed. I took this job with an insurance company because I have always been interested in business and you can do a lot with a law degree (it's not all about suing people).

The company offers up to $500 per class + books up to 8 classes per year towards and MBA, so I was going to go to university of Oklahoma and pretty much get my MBA paid for.

When I took the GMAT without much prep (Kaplan Math & Verbal) I got a 650, so I decided I would try it again for a 700+ and see what I could do to get into a top 15 school.

I started this job last October and absolutely hate my manager (feelings shared with 90% of those in my department, I've verified these with others here firsthand. One example, he is paying a female $2,000 less than I make per year for the same job as me, that actually has 1 more year of experience than I do [his managing actually is breaking the law!]). I want to get a different job but am afraid being here such a short time would really, really look bad on my resume when applying for grad school for Fall '09 admit. What should I do?

By the way, this company requires you to be in your job for 18 months before allowing you to make an internal move (unless the boss likes you, then he'll let you move 3 salary grades up within your first 2 weeks like he did for a co-worker of mine).

I haven't read this thread, but my first thought on the "right way to leave your job" topic was to: crap in my bosses desk drawer before delivering a flying jump kick to his throat screaming "YALE BITCHES!". Then I would go back into his office and crap on his keyboard. Meanwhile the hallways would fill with stunned co-workers, cheering and clapping as I ran towards the front doors. There I would quickly make out with the hot receptionist and finally make my exit. That's what I dream about at night anyway...

Wow, if I got into business school, I would quit the day I knew I got on. I would love to have six months off to travel before I start school. If indeed I did get in, my aim it so live a ridiculously decadant lifestyle and enter b-school penniless (after having paid my tuition of course).
