Answer E - This sentence describes a particular technique used by painters. Since using the technique is their attempt, any words suggesting that painters are trying or attempting to portray three dimensions are redundant. Eliminate (A), (B), (C) and (D) for this reason. That leaves choice (E), which gives all the necessary information in the most concise manner.
Both (A) and (B) are not only redundant but are also unidiomatic. Used as an attempt does not work. Be wary of choices (C) and (D); although the GMAT prefers active voice, passive voice is sometimes the more concise choice. Use at, in choice (C), is unidiomatic. In choice (D), the technique is not something painters attempt to use, they simply use it.

Can you explain what you meant by above? The question says that the technique is an attempt made by painters to portray 3D in 2D..... so what are the exact redundant words you are talking abt?
