This DS question represents the new incarnation of DS questions – DS questions with verbal reasoning.

A salient feature of this question – It is a time saver question if you process the dataset properly. If not, then this question has the potential to become a time hog.

As you watch this video solution, focus on which step(s) you faltered at and which step(s) you took longer?
 
 Were you able to visualize the scene presented in the dataset? If your answer is yes, then you are able to take any column in the table and explain that in your own words. 
 Were you able to visualize what the question is asking? The question statement is not written in the most simple manner. It requires good amount of translation to understand the scene. 
 When you analyzed statement 1, were you able to understand how exactly you will process that information. If no, then you were not able to visualize the dataset as well as you should have. Watch the solution to see how quickly you should be able to process statement 1 if you understood the dataset well enough.

So, always ‘own the dataset’ so that you don’t allow such questions with simple context become a time hog in the test.

Language of question is little bit confusing, what it is essentially saying is that books gifted were different one within listed topic.

(1) One topic is science fiction and the other is humor.

Interested in SF - A,C,D
Interested in humor - B,D

so, A will receive one book of interest 
B will receive one book of interest
C will receive one book of interest
D will receive both book of interest

Hence sufficient.

(2) The intended recipient is Carlos.

Carlos like all other topic books except humor. So he will receive atleast one book of the interest.

From the table, either Humor or Science Fiction or both will be the topic of interest of any persion

Statement 2 : The intended recipient is Carlos

Carlos is intended in all topics except Humor.
So at least 1 of the 2 books must be a topic of interest to Carlos

=> Sufficient

1 book out of 2 must be of the interest of the recipient.

(1) 
--> Humor is liked only by B
--> Science Fiction is like by everyone but B

if the recipient is B, and one of the book is HUMOR --> than he will like humor for sure --> so  at least one  book is of the interest of the recipient
if the recipient is NOT B, and one of the book is SCIENCE FICTION --> than he will like science fiction for sure --> so NOT B will like  at least one  book .

SUFFICIENT

CARLOS likes everything but HUMOR, meaning that any couple of books (PAY ATTENTION TO " each on a different one of the listed topics " phrase) will contain  AT LEAST ONE  book that he will like.

Question:  Will at least one of the two books fall under the recipient's broad topic of interest?

(1) One topic is science fiction and the other is humor.

a)  Science fiction 
Observe that science fiction is a topic of interest for A, C, and D. So, if the intended recipient is A, C, or D, we already see that "at least one of the two books" is in their broad topic of interest.

But with B, science fiction is not a topic of interest.

b)  Humor

Humor is a topic of interest for B. So, we can see that "at least one of the two books" is in their broad topic of interest.

Overall, by picking one science fiction and one humor book, we can see that ->

Irrespective of who the actual recipient is, at least one of the books will be in that recipient's topic of interest.

Thus,  statement 1 is sufficient.

(2) The intended recipient is Carlos.

C is interested in 4 out of the 5 topics. So,  if books in any 2 of the topics are picked, by default, at least one of the books will be in C's topic of interest.

For instance:  
1) history and humor (exactly 1 book in C's topic of interest).
2) language and philosophy (both the books in C's topics of interest).

Hence,  statement 2 is also sufficient .

Answer:  D ( both statements are individually sufficient ).
