Hi Ananya,

I'm sorry to hear that Test Day didn't go as well as hoped. This 630 is still a nice improvement on your initial 550 CAT Score though - and it shows that you have the capacity to learn and improve. In our earlier conversations, I noted that it would likely take you at least 3 additional months of study time before you could hit your Score Goal (while you had just 7 weeks before your Exam), so you might naturally continue to improve as you continue to study.

Statistically-speaking, raising a 630 to the point that you can consistently score 700+ will likely require at least another 1-2 months of consistent, guided study - and you'll have to make significant improvements to how you handle BOTH the Quant and Verbal sections. Thankfully, the GMAT is a consistent, predictable Exam, so you CAN train to score at a higher level - but you might need more than the 3 weeks of study time that you have allotted (so you might want to consider pushing back that next Test Date).

When these types of score drops occur, the two likely "causes" involve either something that was unrealistic during practice or something that was surprising (or not accounted for) on Test Day. Before we discuss any of those potential issues though, it would help if you could provide a bit more information on how you've been studying and your plans:

1) How many hours do you typically study each week? 38-40 hours a week
2) On what dates did you take EACH of your CATs/mocks and how did you score on EACH (including the Quant and Verbal Scaled Scores for EACH)?
6.13.20 MGMAT 640 (Q44 V34)
6.21.20 GMATPrep 640 (Q44 V35)
7.5.29 GMATClub Verbal Diagnostic (V36)
7.10.20 GMATPrep 690 (Q44 V40)
7.15.20 Veritas Prep 680 (Q46 V37)

3) I remember that you were planning to apply in August. What are the exact application deadlines that you are facing? And what are the NEXT application Rounds for each of those Schools? Columbia J Term (End of Aug), INSEAD (Round 2), Oxford (Round 2), Cornell one year MBA (Round 2)

You might also choose to purchase the Enhanced Score Report. While the ESR doesn’t provide a lot of information, there are usually a few data points that we can use to define what went wrong on Test Day (and what you should work on to score higher). If you purchase the ESR, then I'll be happy to analyze it for you.

Hi Rich,

Thanks for your detailed response. Please see my responses in red above. I also wanted to mention that my first mock in which I scored a 550 (Q31 V34) without studying at all, my verbal was still better than my test day performance of V31 so I am really confused what happened. I would really appreciate some guidance.

Hi everyone,

I recently took my GMAT and had a dismal performance. I scored a 630 (Q46V31). I was expecting a score in the range of of 680-700. I was most taken aback by my performance in verbal as I have for the past 2 months consistently gotten a score in the range of 37-40 so for it to go down from that to 31 was shocking.

Just to give a full picture, I have been studying for the past 2.5 months and putting in 6-7 hours a day. The study materials I used are listed below:

- OG 12
- Magoosh Verbal and Math 3 month program (Which included lessons and a question bank of ~ 600 questions)
- Powerscore CR
- MGMAT RC
- Thursdays with Ron ( Watched around 20 videos)
- GMATClub Math Book

I am planning on taking the exam again in around 3 weeks and wanted to know if this amazing community has any advice/ tips for me. I am targeting a score in the range of 690-710 which I think is totally achievable since my last GMATprep mock ( a week before the exam) was 690 Q45V40). Also, I have severe anxiety issues and wasn't able to sleep before the exam so that obviously impacted my performance on test day. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
AG

Hi AG,
It is sad to hear that you could not reflect the scores of your mock tests on the actual GMAT. But do not get disappointed because an improvement is always possible. Let me share my insights on what needs to be done.

First of all, it is really necessary to identify the reasons behind the drastic difference between your mocks and the official one. I can think of two possibilities:
  • One reason might be the nervousness on the test day. As you said, you have a few anxiety issues, if that is the reason, then I guess you are good to for a retake if you are satisfied with Q46. This time make sure you have a proper sleep and take the test with a relaxed mind.
  • The other reason might be you are not likely following a specific approach for all the tests. If your approach is not consistent, then I think there is some work to do.

To solve Verbal questions, you need to use the right strategies because test makers set a lot of traps to confuse students. You might often get stuck between two close answer choices and to choose the right one, you need to have a proper understanding of the concept behind the question. If you feel that your approach was inconsistent, I suggest you to give at least 4 weeks of time for your preparation and then give a retake.

The focus for these 4 weeks has to be to understand the right methodology to solve the questions. To give you an example, to solve SC questions, you need to approach them from a meaning stand-point. The test makers test your ability to convey the right meaning without any ambiguity. So, it is really important to understand the meaning and also the have the knowledge of grammatical rules which help you to eliminate a few answer choices.

In the same way, CR and RC also need to be approached in a specific way. But to suggest you in a better way, I would need you to provide me with a few details.
  • Apart from the last mock you took a week before the exam, were all the mocks you took the official ones? More importantly, the ones in which you got a score of 37-40.
  • Were you following a specific approach in these mock tests and if yes, did the approach change in the actual test?

Answers to these questions will help me guide you in a better way. You can write back to me here or a better way would be to discuss this quickly over a call. You can schedule a free consultation using the below link.
