I agree that its B, but I'm confused about what "them" refers to: "...those who opposed them." I think it doesn't have a clear antecedent, no?

here them not in the underlined part.. so need not worry about it.

Between X who helps Nazis and Y who oppose Nazis..

From the time of its defeat by the Germans in 1940 until its liberation in 1944, France was bitter and divided country; a kind of civil war raged in the Vichy government between those who wanted to collaborate with the Nazis with those who opposed them.

(A) between those who wanted to collaborate with the Naxis with those who opposed
(B) between those who wanted to collaborate with the Naxis and those who opposed
(C) between those wanting to collaborate with the Naxis with those opposing
(D) among those who wanted to collaborate with the Nazis and those who opposed
(E) among those wanting to collaborate with the Naxis with those opposing

Main Issues:

1) Correct Idiom for 2 things is "between X and Y". Incorrect Idiom: "between X with Y". Among is used with 3 things.
2) "wanted...opposed" is better than "wanting...opposing" since those actions happened in the past. We should avoid unnecessary verb-ing words on GMAT.

Let’s see what the quick way is to get to the right answer:

First you see that there are two parties under consideration here – the people who wanted to collaborate with the Nazis and people who opposed the Nazis. The underlined portion of the sentence begins with ‘between’.

Right! Now, with this, we need to see how ‘between’ is used in Option A. Is it idiomatic?

Always think of this simple example to check – ‘between A and B’

We need ‘and’ to compare two things when we use ‘between’. How do we know ‘among’ is not what we want here? Among is used when there are more than two things under consideration.

So based on this information, we can look at the answer choices.

A - not idiomatic
B - hold on to this option
C - not idiomatic
D - use of 'among' incorrect
E - use of 'among' incorrect

Eliminate Options A, C, D, and E.

Option B is the best choice.

Hope this helps!

If there are two parties, between is correct and among is incorrect
Between X and Y is correct usage.

IMO B

Hey, 'them' clearly refers to Nazis (there is no other antecedent 'them' would make sense with). France? Nope. That would've been 'it'. Same for 'the government'- it is 1 acting unit therefore we cannot refer to 'the government' as 'them'. Has to be only Nazis.

hope that is helpful.
