Hi kidclutch,

I'm not sure whether you'd like to discuss your Official Scores in more detail or not - but if you do, then I suggest that you post in one of the GMAT-specific Forums (and provide a bit more information about how you studied, the materials you used, Test Day itself, etc.). Since this is the Admissions Consulting Forum, I don't think that it would be appropriate to have a lengthy conversation here about non-Admissions questions.

Hello,

About a month ago, I took one of the two free official tests provided by the GMAC after familiarizing myself with the test and got a 760. I then did a few hundred practice problems and got a 770 on the second GMAC practice test. Those results made me confident that I could get a 770+ on the real thing, but I ended up with a 730. Then, I purchased the four extra official GMAC exams and got a 770 on all of them. Confident again, I sat down for the exam for a second time yesterday, but got a 720. I’m a college senior looking to apply to Harvard 2+2 and (if that doesn’t work out) other good schools 3-4 years down the line.

Should I just give in and apply with a 730? Would I have a good chance to get 770+ if I really buckled down and studied hard? Would it be worth it to try to do that? I’m distraught and weary about investing too much time and money into this exam; my family’s finances aren’t in the best shape.

Thank you.

Normally I’d say after two attempts with a 730 there’s not much to be gained. But if you are knocking 770s with that consistency on official practice exams it may behoove you to retake one more time. Do everything to stack the deck in your favor for the test. GMAC acknowledged a fully prepared individual can sway +\- 30 points a try based on luck, alertness etc.

Sign up one more time, study just enough to stay warm. Find your zen before the test make sure you’re well rested. Eat healthy fatty foods for a week before. If taking test early get up every day for 2 weeks at time you need to on test day and do problems at that hour. Leave nothing to chance, cuz it sounds like chance is eating your lunch right now.

Hi kidclutch, Normally one doesn't associate scores of 730 and 720 with frustration (elation and ecstasy sound more concomitant).

However, I would suggest you re-take the exam for following reasons:

i) You have been consistently scoring 770+ in GMATPrep and so, you clearly have the potential. The exam days have just been turning out to be different.

ii) Since Harvard 2+2 would be an extremely competitive program, a 750+ would be a great differentiator

iii) Since you specifically mention about your Finances, a great score could fetch you some scholarship as well.

All the best!
