Sad as it sounds I hope its true...I know business school is extremely competitive and you know there has to be a percentage of students who get ahead by any means. Its not just limitted to Fuqua, every school at every level has these students. The real question is how great of is the percentage, is it social acceptable and common or just a small minority? Either way its unfair to the students who study hard and do all the work for a class to have to compete against someone who has an unfair advantage. In baseball, everyone for the past few years has been up in arms over steroids and how it gave some players unfair advantages...this is the same kind of thing. MLB players were on steroids to get their stats higher so they could get that big paycheck and stay in the big leagues. Just replace baseball players with students, stats with grades, and big leagues with big business.

Maybe if a bunch of people were caught and expelled (from any big name program) it might be a least a little deterrent. It could also push other students who aren't cheating to speakout about it, especially if they realize the damage something like that could do to the reputation of their program. Also, if you were expelled from one MBA program for cheating you are going to have a hard time getting in anywhere else, so basically you are gambling with your future. If someone is putting their career on hold and has big aspirations for the future, even thinks for a second they might get caught and thrown out…then maybe they will do the honorable thing and not cheat. Besides if you are willing to cheat in school to get ahead what are you willing to do in business to be successful. Look at all the examples in the last few years of what unethical business managers have done…Enron, Tyco, and HealthSouth.

Not to throw gasoline on a fire, but weren't there a few Duke students who were recently found not guilty of a highly controversial gang rape incident?

Yes, they were undergrads. Here in the US it was national news. Rather than being found not guilty, the state's attorney general threw out the charges. The prosecutor will probably lose his job and be disbarred over this incident because of the way things were handled.

If it is true, what makes it surprising is that I never had much sense that Duke was very competitive.

I'm just wondering why people would feel compelled to cheat in such a team oriented environment. If there is no pressure to cheat, were they compelled from within to cheat?

So call me naive, but what would cheating entail these days?

Back in high school, sometimes students who had a morning final would tip off students taking an afternoon final.

In college one guy stashed his notes in the bathroom and seemed to need to pee a lot during the test.

I suppose relatively wealthy MBA students might pay others to write papers....wait, do we even write papers?

Interesting read and interesting to see people blame it on cultural differences.

I grew up outside the US in a culture where cheating was widely accepted. I'd be the first to admit that I wasn't above participating in that because "helping" and accepting "help" from fellow classmates was not just tolerated but expected. But once I came to the US that stopped 100%, if for no other reason than that the consequences of getting caught were so severe. You also have to be willing and able to adapt to new cultural norms when you move to a new country.

If all the expelled students are indeed internationals, then that sort of raises questions about how well they're communicating the rules and how well they're orienting/on-boarding their international students. Having 10% of your class get busted like that is pretty amazing.

This is very sad!!!

Especially, I am about to become a dukie........it really hits me hard!

Like any other crime, the caught offenses only represent very small portion of the actual incidents.

Dukes, I respect and praise your instant change when you came to US.
COOL ! I wish more people are as wise as you are.

From a Current Student regarding the Duke Scandal

Quote:
I'm a student at the Fuqua School of Business, and for the sake of clarity, I'd like to state a few important facts that should clear up some of the rumors that have been propagated on this board.

https://forums.businessweek.com/n/pfx/fo ... &tid=72258

Quote:
2. Nine of the students were sentenced to expulsion. The remaining students were given lighter sentences. The honor council decides whether to deliver a minor, moderate or severe penalty. The variance in penalty reflects a variance in the degree of offense.

According to the article on that blog, the students were cheating on a take-home final exam. I would bet that probably means that some of the students called each other up and worked together on their answers.

I don't understand. Do you mean that a software program determined that the students were cheating?
