Sad as it sounds I hope its true...I know business school is extremely competitive and you know there has to be a percentage of students who get ahead by any means. Its not just limitted to Fuqua, every school at every level has these students. The real question is how great of is the percentage, is it social acceptable and common or just a small minority? Either way its unfair to the students who study hard and do all the work for a class to have to compete against someone who has an unfair advantage. In baseball, everyone for the past few years has been up in arms over steroids and how it gave some players unfair advantages...this is the same kind of thing. MLB players were on steroids to get their stats higher so they could get that big paycheck and stay in the big leagues. Just replace baseball players with students, stats with grades, and big leagues with big business.
Maybe if a bunch of people were caught and expelled (from any big name program) it might be a least a little deterrent. It could also push other students who aren't cheating to speakout about it, especially if they realize the damage something like that could do to the reputation of their program. Also, if you were expelled from one MBA program for cheating you are going to have a hard time getting in anywhere else, so basically you are gambling with your future. If someone is putting their career on hold and has big aspirations for the future, even thinks for a second they might get caught and thrown out…then maybe they will do the honorable thing and not cheat. Besides if you are willing to cheat in school to get ahead what are you willing to do in business to be successful. Look at all the examples in the last few years of what unethical business managers have done…Enron, Tyco, and HealthSouth.
