Fuqua vs. Columbia vs. Tuck

Question

Hi, I wanted to see what the opinions within the community are regarding the decision I'm facing - between Fuqua, Columbia, and Tuck. I have already ruled out NYU Stern. I wrote down some of my thoughts - please feel free to comment on any part

German, male, 30, want to pivot from consulting in the financial services industry to in the real economy, most likely the energy sector. The could be a typical MBA graduate position in a big energy company, an investment role (if the opportunity arises, something in energy PE/VC, but likely not IB), or launching / joining a start-up in this space. Want to stay in the US for at least a few years, maybe go to Asia or back to Europe later on. Fuqua: Pro: - I think the community is amazing - the question is whether it truly sets Fuqua apart from CBS? - Duke University in general is now a very strong brand in the US, ranked 5th in latest report; hope to make connections to other students within Duke - Strong academic focus on energy (incl. two specializations), big energy conference, Nicholas School for the Environment, ... - I think I would love the weather, city, etc. - Very prestigious scholarship (Fuqua Impact Scholar) Contra: - Fuqua brand recognition not as strong yet (internationally) - nationally on the same level as Columbia? Columbia Pro: - International brand recognition is a lot higher (at least today) - Incredible amount of (possible) opportunities in NYC - the question is whether I would be able to capitalize on any of them, given the already busy BS schedule - Could build a "different kind of network", i.e. many wealthy people, investors, etc. are from CBS - might offer advantages, e.g. when fundraising for a start-up (?) Contra: - On the other hand, whilst the general network is very large - the question is if that diminishes the strength of the network... - Differences in scholarships + living expenses will likely result in $ 100k in additional debt - not a complete deal breaker, but definitely not looking forward to this, especially if I wanted to start my own thing - I feel like NYC might be too much of a distraction for me, incl. the long ways from one point to another - Academically, I'm not sure if CBS offers the same energy focus as Fuqua does Tuck Pro: - Had super positive interactions with a number of students / alumni - incredible community - Ivy League status, high prestige - Academically very strong in energy (Revers Center, Irving Institute) Contra: - Tuck brand recognition not as strong yet (internationally) - Weather, and Hanover might be a bit small - Community is super strong, but also quite small (due to class size)

If you are looking at Finance, I don't think you can really compete with CBS. It rivals Wharton in terms of people it places into Finance and has the highest placement into finance among all bschools. Not that it guarantees jobs but all the people coming and graduating are looking at Finance roles, have finance background, and would be your network. Tuck only has 20% of a smaller class, so on this metric, it is a weaker contender as well as Fuqua with only 16%.

Keep in mind that Energy industry recruiting is very slim (with only 1% of total MBA jobs heading there). Tuck has 2% which is double the average but still only 6 people per year in all roles. So a plan B is highly recommended at any program. Fuqua's number jumped from 2% in 2022 to 4% for Internships in 2023 so maybe it is good news... but it is not listed on the Jobs report. Keep in mind however, that legacy Energy companies usually do not sponsor international students in the US, so even those 2% you will have to cut in half at least.

One more note, your BSchool network only really matters for the 3 years after bschool. You will find your first job with it but you won't rely on it to look for other jobs. Think about your college network - will you be leveraging it to find your next job? Probably but it won't be your first or strongest choice as it's been years.

Program Experience/Alums:

I think you can't compete with Tuck and their community and their alums. I have heard many anecdotal stories about super high response rates among the Tuck alums. It wins hands down. Fuqua likely would be second and Columbia third perhaps due to distractions in NYC and a very large program size. I would love to hear from a current Columbia student about their experience with student body. I can see however, NYC offering an amazing time/experience although at the cost of community. I echo your concerns about the city being the ultimate USA experience while also being expensive and distracting you from the community.

Choice?
I think if you are looking at Finance, Columbia is amazing. If you are looking at Energy, Fuqua is a great option, and if you are looking for a network. I think in your case since your industry is so narrow and specific, it makes sense to go through the companies on Linked In and through school employment reports to see where who is placed and then use that as a guide if that is Priority #1 (usually is). Also, I would look at Plan B and consider where is the best fit for you for Plan B.

I feel Fuqua is a great all-around choice here. It is strong in every category though not the best in each.
