Hi all,
When do schools usually release their essays? When do applications open up? I know generally R1 applications are due in September, but when does the whole process start?

They start infosessions around Jun-July (for Aug/Sept deadlines)
I recommend starting right away and not wait because you will get the hang of the process too. The people who apply starting July usually work in a sense of urgency. If you can do so now, you'll work in a comfortable mindset and that will be reflected in the thoughtfulness of your application

The essays are really the time consuming part, but you can take care of as many items as possible that are not school specific. For example, you can get your resume/CV in solid shape. Or, you can reach out to recommenders to get them lined up.
The questions do change year over year, but some remain the same. Check the current ones out for a sense for what types of questions are generally asked. You can even outline topics for the most common essay prompts (e.g., post-MBA goals, why X school, proudest accomplishment).
Then, once the officially applications come out, you can get to outlining and writing properly.
