All students enrolled in Georgetown University’s MBA Full-Time Program are required to complete four residencies in addition to their core and elective coursework.
Residencies are week long team-based experiences that immerse MBA students in simulated and real-world business environments to gain practical experience.
Georgetown Means Business: Students begin their first year with the Georgetown Means Business Residency. As a primer to the Georgetown MBA Full-Time Program experience, this residency covers the fundamentals of global leadership. Students work in teams to analyze a live business case. The week culminates with a case competition in which students present their analysis and recommendations to faculty and corporate executives.
Career Track Immersion Residency: During the spring semester of the first year, students begin to delve deeper into their specific focus areas within the Career Track Immersion Residency, developing an understanding of how management strategies can be applied to their chosen field. Students select from one of several career tracks. Within each track, students work in teams to solve a particularly challenging real-world business problem provided by an actual client company. Company executives brief students on important contextual considerations, and faculty provide ongoing coaching to teams throughout the week. At the end of the week, teams within each track compete in a case competition during which they present their recommendations to faculty and company executives.
Leadership Residency: Following their summer internships, students prepare a thoughtful Strategic Leadership Analysis during which they assess their leadership strengths and weaknesses, envision the kind of leader they wish to become, and identify the experiences that will help them reach their goal. Self-assessment instruments, structured in-class leadership activities, mindful observations of others' leadership, and self-reflective activities constitute the raw material from which students construct the analysis. Students study leadership cases and interact with a number of high-ranking corporate and government leaders.
Global Residency: In the second year, students begin work on the Global Residency, the capstone experience of the Georgetown MBA Full-Time Program. Throughout the year, student consulting teams work together to solve a pressing business problem facing a foreign organization or Fortune 500 company with operations overseas. At the end of Module 3, student teams travel abroad to the client’s facilities to finalize their project and present recommendations to senior leadership.
In recent years, teams have traveled to Brazil, China, the Czech Republic, India, United Arab Emirates, South Africa, and Vietnam and worked for clients ranging from 3M and Philips Electronics to the World Bank and Yahoo!.
