Hi,
I had taken the Gmat in Sept 2011, I scored a measly
700(Q 52, V34). Needless to say that I was disappointed , since I had prepared almost 2-3 weeks for that. Then, I decided to take again, only this time I had a strategy in mind.
I practiced only the questions I had gotten wrong from the first preparation (of Gmat) for the last 6 days before the 2nd Attempt. I studied for 2-4 days only exclusively doing questions which I got wrong while practicing before. Then, I took a practice test-Kaplan(Interactive), in which I scored a 740. Then , I checked the mistakes which are common to the earlier mistakes I have been practicing with the Mock test mistakes. Then, I was sure about which type of questions I was struggling with and made a note in mind to give more time to them, during the actual GMAT. I was good in quants already so didn't bother to practice again, same with reading Comprehension type questions.
Finally, took the Gmat. The quant went well, because I could see the difficulty of the questions on an average was pretty decent. Then, in verbal, I was extremely easy with question which I knew I generally did not make mistakes, and devoted a little extra for those I had found I used to make mistakes with.(some types of SC and CR). Finally, finished the exam 10 minutes before time, but I was supremely confident I will get at least 740 this time. Voila! I had scored
760(Q50 V44). All this, with just 6 days of very focused and sensible preparation.
This is exactly what I wanted to say, make sensible preparation rather than tedious or laborious ones. See yourself as the expert who makes mistakes in specific areas, and specifically correct those. Then, your hit rate would be extremely accurate and also, prepare with only 1 or 2 books. I have seen different books have slightly different types of hardness quotient for different sections. So I would advice to buy a book or guide know for tough questions in the section in which you are weak in(for this analyze your faults).
cheers,
Sourav
