Hi Hnoorshn,

If your last CAT was 2 months ago, then it would make sense to take a new FULL-LENGTH CAT (including the Essay and IR sections) sometime soon. That score result will give us a better sense of how well you've honed your skills and what material/Tactics you've retained. Once you have that result, you should post back here.

Since you have a lengthier study timeline, you should plan on taking 1 FULL CAT every 2 weeks or so going forwards. That routine can be adjusted of course, but you don't want to go for long stretches of time without taking a FULL CAT. Those score results are really the only practical way to gauge how well your studies are going, so you have to make them a part of your overall Study Plan.

Hello,

I gave my 2nd CAT yesterday. Got a 530 (Q36,V27). My first CAT score was 450. i was expecting at least a 100 points improvement. Anyways here is the debrief.

1) Quant section (Horrible Pacing): The questions weren't really difficult but for some reason i ended up spending way too much time solving the first 20 questions. I had to literally breeze through the last 17 questions.

Number of Questions answered correctly
First 20 Questions : 14/20
Last 17 Questions : 2/17
Screenshot attached.

2) Verbal Section : I need to work on Reading Comprehension (58% accuracy), the pacing wasn't as bad as the quant section but i think i need to work on it. CR is clearly my strength (80% accuracy).
As for SC, Last time i spent more than a month on SC and nothing came out of it and i ended up burning out myself. So i have more or less given up on trying to improve my SC score. That is why i am relying on CR and RC.If there is a way to solve SC questions without memorizing 100+ different grammatical rules please let me know.

Number of Questions answered correctly

First 27 Questions : 22/27
Last 14 Questions : 4/14
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
My current course is nearly over, only 3 lessons left i.e. AWA, Advanced Word problem and statistics and combinatorics. After that i am going to start working on my pacing and trying to find a suitable strategy.

Hi Hnoorshn,

To start, this recent CAT score is a nice improvement over your prior CAT score.

Waiting for such a long time between taking CATs (in this case, about 4 months) is NOT a good idea though. One of the ways that you'll learn NOT to get 'bogged down' on certain questions is by forcing yourself to 'dump' questions when appropriate. While you can practice that skill, there's really no better way to train for that specific situation then to take FULL-LENGTH CATs under realistic conditions. Your pacing 'issue' is not surprising, since you haven't been taking those CATs as recommended. By extension, having to guess on so many questions (because you're low on time) will limit how high you can score on the GMAT.

As you review this CAT, you really should take a good look at each of the questions that you did answer. WHY did it take so long to answer each? What could you have done differently to speed up? Were there any questions that were just too hard AND you wasted time trying to answer them?
