Hello guys
I'm writing to seek support and advice. I recently decided to take the GMAT as it's required for the business school I want to enter. The target score is between 600 and 700. After learning about the GMAT structure and question types, I took my first practice test after two days of quant practice. Unfortunately, the initial results were not as I hoped – I scored 34 in Quant and 12 in Verbal. The problem in Verbal, besides my limited English proficiency was due to bad time management. Sadly, I couldn't handle the timing and ended up guessing randomly, missing the last two questions.

Now, I have two questions for you:
1) Is it possible to raise the score to 600 in a month? (I plan to dedicate 5 hours a day to GMAT during this month)
2) Do you recommend the classic or the Focus edition of the GMAT?

Thanks a lot.

Hi,

Classic or Focus edition
The answer would depend on your strength and weaknesses.
Verbal: If your SC is the worst of the three, SC, CR and RC, then Focus edition is better. But then the time management will become even more difficult because some SCs can be answered within 30 secs.
DI: It will include around 40-50% DS, so if you are good at quant, this would help.
Quant: Really would not make a lot of difference as the quant difficulty is same in both.

Recom:
The window of time to take Classic is just a month, so you could improve another 5-6 points in quant to get to 39-40. But improving 37-38 from 12 in verbal will be a herculean task unless 12 is not the actual representative of your verbal.
One month 600+ is doable but would be difficult.

Most important is to know your weaknesses clearly and work upon them.

Thank you very much for the information. Certainly, the verbal section is where I struggle the most as I'm not familiar with the English language. However, I don't consider the score of 12 representative since, unfortunately, I guessed half of the questions randomly. Thanks a lot for the advice.

Consider checking out Manhattan-Prep's 6th Edition for SC and CR as well as using question/time markers for time management. Doing timed practice sets may also be helpful. If you're new to the GMAT, you may want to check the end date for the classic version of the GMAT, too.

Thanks a lot for the helpful tips! I'll surely look into the idiom list. The last date for the classic GMAT is around January 31st, giving me about a month to get ready. Any advice for Reading Comprehension? I struggle with unfamiliar terms, and it requires me to read the text multiple times, taking up a significant amount of time. Thanks again!
