A lot of GMAT tutors provide templates for AWA. Can those be used directly in the actual GMAT? Or it is recommended not to?

A AWA template is just a framework that gives you the skeleton of your response. You have to obviously fill-in that skeleton using your own structured reasoning arguments.
So, any decent template is fine, as long as you do a good job at filling it up.
