(A) The effect noted in the study is consistent across adults and does not vary according to diet or activity level.
what about the kids? they are part of demographic as well and there can be some discrepancy. incorrect

(B) Increased inflammation can increase metabolic rate, and temperature-controlled environments that have become much more prevalent over the last century produce a reduction in inflammation.
true. since temperature-controlled environments have become more prevalent, more reduction in inflammation would take place. resulting in drop in body temperature.
seems fine. hold on

(C) Over the past century, increased research into thyroid disorders, such as hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism, has greatly improved medical science’s understanding of how hormones can influence a person’s metabolism.
influence in increasing or decreasing the metabolism ?? no info provided. incorrect

(D) In some instances, the researchers conducting the study had to rely on information from other studies and were not able to directly gather the data themselves.
out of scope

(E) The percentage of adults willing to participate in scientific studies has increased over the last century, as public perception of medical research has changed.
may be an answer but not so strong

IC: A recent study has shown that, in a certain geographic region, average human body temperature has decreased over the last century at an average rate of 0.05 degrees Fahrenheit per decade
Argument : One theory is that this change is due to advances in technology making thermometers more accurate over time. However, comparisons of body temperature data taken with similar thermometers across multiple decades showed the same gradual change. Additionally, the results are consistent across all demographic groups over this time period
Conclusion : the results are consistent across all demographic groups over this time period... researchers now hypothesize that this decrease in average body temperature corresponds to a decrease in average metabolic rate.

reversibly proportional is body temp with metabolic rate ..

(A) The effect noted in the study is consistent across adults and does not vary according to diet or activity level. not in line with argument

(B) Increased inflammation can increase metabolic rate, and temperature-controlled environments that have become much more prevalent over the last century produce a reduction in inflammation.
true and strengthens the conclusion

(C) Over the past century, increased research into thyroid disorders, such as hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism, has greatly improved medical science’s understanding of how hormones can influence a person’s metabolism. irrelevant

(D) In some instances, the researchers conducting the study had to rely on information from other studies and were not able to directly gather the data themselves. irrelevant

(E) The percentage of adults willing to participate in scientific studies has increased over the last century, as public perception of medical research has changed. irrelevant

OPTION B is correct

(A) The effect noted in the study is consistent across adults and does not vary according to diet or activity level.
--> Strengthens the argument as it includes more variables but still suggests with consistent results

(B) Increased inflammation can increase metabolic rate, and temperature-controlled environments that have become much more prevalent over the last century produce a reduction in inflammation.
--> Not relevant. Cause and effect are not discussed, only a corresponding change has been discussed

(C) Over the past century, increased research into thyroid disorders, such as hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism, has greatly improved medical science’s understanding of how hormones can influence a person’s metabolism.
--> Not relevant. Cause and effect are not discussed, only a corresponding change has been discussed

(D) In some instances, the researchers conducting the study had to rely on information from other studies and were not able to directly gather the data themselves.
--> Weakens the argument

(E) The percentage of adults willing to participate in scientific studies has increased over the last century, as public perception of medical research has changed.
--> Generic statement and may not correspond to the population in question

Answer is A
(A) The effect noted in the study is consistent across adults and does not vary according to diet or activity level.
Not wrong hold on to it
(B) Increased inflammation can increase metabolic rate, and temperature-controlled environments that have become much more prevalent over the last century produce a reduction in inflammation.
But you don't know for sure that decrease in inflammation would decrease metabolic rate
(C) Over the past century, increased research into thyroid disorders, such as hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism, has greatly improved medical science’s understanding of how hormones can influence a person’s metabolism.
Irrelevant
(D) In some instances, the researchers conducting the study had to rely on information from other studies and were not able to directly gather the data themselves.
somewhat undermines the conclusion
(E) The percentage of adults willing to participate in scientific studies has increased over the last century, as public perception of medical research has changed.
so the sample size increased, which is a good thing. But this is irrelevant

Therefore, A is the winner

Straight off the bat, let's analyse options C, D and E first.

(C) It says that research shows hormones can influence metabolism. Well, good for hormones, but how does it help is explaining the decline in metabolism or temperature? It doesn't, let's dump this
(D) Relying on other studies isn't relevant for strengthening the hypothesis because it doesn't really say what the topic for other studies was. It's too vague
(E) Again, irrelevant. The sample size isn't the issue.

I'm unsure between options (A) and (B), but option (A) is rather a weakener imo. It talks about how the effect noted is constant and other factors are constant. It goes to show that metabolism hasn't declined. Whereas option B does talk about how a reduction in inflammation has led to a decrease in metabolism which might have been the reason for the decrease in the AVERAGE metabolism rate. Some people who had inflammation now have reduced levels of inflammation or no inflammation at all.

Hence, option B is the right answer imo.

Correct answer: Choice B

Strengthen the conclusion question:
we have to strengthen this: "decrease in average body temperature corresponds to a decrease in average metabolic rate."

(A) The effect noted in the study is consistent across adults and does not vary according to diet or activity level.
- Wrong : Does not talk about the correlation between temperature and metabolic rate

(B) Increased inflammation can increase metabolic rate, and temperature-controlled environments that have become much more prevalent over the last century produce a reduction in inflammation.
- Correct: Does talk about the correlation between temperature and metabolic rate

(C) Over the past century, increased research into thyroid disorders, such as hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism, has greatly improved medical science’s understanding of how hormones can influence a person’s metabolism.
- Wrong : Does not talk about the correlation between temperature and metabolic rate

(D) In some instances, the researchers conducting the study had to rely on information from other studies and were not able to directly gather the data themselves.

(A) The effect noted in the study is consistent across adults and does not vary according to diet or activity level.- Irrelevant. The argument is that reduced temperature reduces metabolic rate

(B) Increased inflammation can increase metabolic rate, and temperature-controlled environments that have become much more prevalent over the last century produce a reduction in inflammation. - this ties the cause and effect as stated in the passage that decrease in temperature leads to reduced inflammation which causes reduced metabolic rate.

(C) Over the past century, increased research into thyroid disorders, such as hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism, has greatly improved medical science’s understanding of how hormones can influence a person’s metabolism. -- It brings a new information and states that factor other than temperature is responsible for reduced metabolism, its rather weakening the argument

(D) In some instances, the researchers conducting the study had to rely on information from other studies and were not able to directly gather the data themselves. - irrelevant

(E) The percentage of adults willing to participate in scientific studies has increased over the last century, as public perception of medical research has changed.- irrelevant

(A) The effect noted in the study is consistent across adults and does not vary according to diet or activity level.
Looks good. This would strengthen the given hypothesis.

(B) Increased inflammation can increase metabolic rate, and temperature-controlled environments that have become much more prevalent over the last century produce a reduction in inflammation.
Inflammation and temperature-controlled environments are irrelevant.

(C) Over the past century, increased research into thyroid disorders, such as hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism, has greatly improved medical science’s understanding of how hormones can influence a person’s metabolism.
Thyroid disorders and hormones are irrelevant.

(D) In some instances, the researchers conducting the study had to rely on information from other studies and were not able to directly gather the data themselves.
This is a weakening statement. It shows imperfect data.

(E) The percentage of adults willing to participate in scientific studies has increased over the last century, as public perception of medical research has changed.
This is not relevant. If anything, this can be weakening as it might indicate that we have very little historic data, as people were unwilling earlier.

The correct answer is B
Choice A, D and E strength the fact that there's no correlation between temperature and metabolism
Choice C is tricky but it explains the effect of hormones on metabolism
Choice B strengthen the fact that decrease temperature could decrease inflammation wbich
Decreases metabolism

Conclusion: Researchers now hypothesize that this decrease in average body temperature corresponds to a decrease in average metabolic rate.

(A) The effect noted in the study is consistent across adults and does not vary according to diet or activity level.

This information is already present in the premise - the results are consistent across all demographic groups over this time period
The option doesn't provide much additional information for use to weigh.

(B) Increased inflammation can increase metabolic rate, and temperature-controlled environments that have become much more prevalent over the last century produce a reduction in inflammation.

Though not my favorite, this option tells us that there is decrease in inflammation.
So a decade back certain metabolic rate could have been increased due to inflammation. Now because there is a decrease in inflammation that increase is no longer applicable. Hence we can conclude that , "this decrease in average body temperature corresponds to a decrease in average metabolic rate"

(C) Over the past century, increased research into thyroid disorders, such as hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism, has greatly improved medical science’s understanding of how hormones can influence a person’s metabolism.

IMO, this is not relevant to the argument.

(D) In some instances, the researchers conducting the study had to rely on information from other studies and were not able to directly gather the data themselves.

IMO, this is not relevant to the argument.

(E) The percentage of adults willing to participate in scientific studies has increased over the last century, as public perception of medical research has changed.

Percentage of adults, but do we know if the actual number of adults increased or decreased ?

-This option is out of scope.

(B) Increased inflammation can increase metabolic rate, and temperature-controlled environments that have become much more prevalent over the last century produce a reduction in inflammation.
- This is the correct choice. As temperature controlled environment has helped to reduce inflammation which in turn has reduced the metabolic rate. Thus decrease in metabolic rate has decreased the average body temperature. This is a strengthener.

(C) Over the past century, increased research into thyroid disorders, such as hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism, has greatly improved medical science’s understanding of how hormones can influence a person’s metabolism.
-This is out of scope
(D) In some instances, the researchers conducting the study had to rely on information from other studies and were not able to directly gather the data themselves.-This is a weakener. This will falsify the argument as the data itself is not correct.

(E) The percentage of adults willing to participate in scientific studies has increased over the last century, as public perception of medical research has changed. -This is irrelevant. As even if the number of adults increases the average temperature will remain same

(A) The effect noted in the study is consistent across adults and does not vary according to diet or activity level.
INCORRECT. The decrease in average temperature is already specified as a premise of the argument. Considering all aspects (diet, activity level, demographic groups etc.) the average human body temperature has decreased. The researchers hypothesize the result of decrease in average human body temperature. So it does not matter even if the effect noted in the study is consistent across adults and does not vary according to diet or activity level, or not.

(B) Increased inflammation can increase metabolic rate, and temperature-controlled environments that have become much more prevalent over the last century produce a reduction in inflammation.
CORRECT. This directly strengthens the argument, by showing that one of the causes of increased metabolic rate and therefore increased average body temperature is reduced because of temperature-controlled environments becoming more prevalent.

(C) Over the past century, increased research into thyroid disorders, such as hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism, has greatly improved medical science’s understanding of how hormones can influence a person’s metabolism.
INCORRECT. This does not effect the argument in question.

(D) In some instances, the researchers conducting the study had to rely on information from other studies and were not able to directly gather the data themselves.
INCORRECT. This statement actually goes in opposite direction and weakens the argument.

(E) The percentage of adults willing to participate in scientific studies has increased over the last century, as public perception of medical research has changed.
INCORRECT. Argument talks about increase in average body temperature of humans. The percentage of adults willing to participate in scientific studies increasing over the last century has nothing to do with the result of decrease in average human body temperature. So this statement does not affect the argument.

Premise: A recent study has shown that, in a certain geographic region, average human body temperature has decreased over the last century at an average rate of 0.05 degrees Fahrenheit per decade.
Counter-Premise: One theory is that this change is due to advances in technology making thermometers more accurate over time.
Premise: However, comparisons of body temperature data taken with similar thermometers across multiple decades showed the same gradual change.
Premise: Additionally, the results are consistent across all demographic groups over this time period.

Researcher's hypothesis: In light of these results, researchers now hypothesize that this decrease in average body temperature corresponds to a decrease in average metabolic rate.

Which of the following, if true about this geographic region, would most strengthen the researchers’ hypothesis?

Quote:
(A) The effect noted in the study is consistent across adults and does not vary according to diet or activity level.

There may be several causes for an effect (decreased average body temperature). Therefore, diet or activity level may also cause decrease in average body temperature. Since the effect noted in the study is consistent across adults and does not vary according to diet or activity level, the statement strengthen's the researcher's hypothesis.
Correct

Quote:
(B) Increased inflammation can increase metabolic rate, and temperature-controlled environments that have become much more prevalent over the last century produce a reduction in inflammation.

Increased inflammation can increase metabolic rate but it is not clear that reduction in inflammation can reduce metabolic rate and lower the average body temperature.
Incorrect

Quote:
(C) Over the past century, increased research into thyroid disorders, such as hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism, has greatly improved medical science’s understanding of how hormones can influence a person’s metabolism.

It is not necessary that improved understanding of how hormones can influence a person’s metabolism will lower metabolic rate and lower average body temperature.
Incorrect

Quote:
(D) In some instances, the researchers conducting the study had to rely on information from other studies and were not able to directly gather the data themselves.

This statement doubts the researcher's findings and put the hypothesis in question.
Incorrect

Quote:
(E) The percentage of adults willing to participate in scientific studies has increased over the last century, as public perception of medical research has changed.

This statement increases the likelihood of mismatch in accuracy of data over a period of time since participation in scientific studies have changed over time with public perception. This weakens researcher's hypothesis.
Incorrect

We have to find the options which strengthen the hypothesis that a "decrease in average body temperature corresponds to a decrease in average metabolic rate"

(A) The effect noted in the study is consistent across adults and does not vary according to diet or activity level: it talks about adults. What about old age or kids? They are also human. Too narrow, Reject.

(B) Increased inflammation can increase metabolic rate, and temperature-controlled environments that have become much more prevalent over the last century produced a reduction in inflammation: Increased inflammation can increase metabolic rate, but does the reverse holds? Can decreasing inflammation also decrease metabolic rate? Not sure. Reject

(C) Over the past century, increased research into thyroid disorders, such as hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism, has greatly improved medical science’s understanding of how hormones can influence a person’s metabolism: Research studies help us to understand more about how hormones can influence a person’s metabolism. Looks like strengthening because once we get to know more about metabolism, we can conclude it decreases over time. Hold.

(D) In some instances, the researchers conducting the study had to rely on information from other studies and were not able to directly gather the data themselves: Out of context, Reject

(E) The percentage of adults willing to participate in scientific studies has increased over the last century, as public perception of medical research has changed: Out of context, Reject
Hence C is the right option.

Fact: A recent study has shown that, in a certain geographic region, average human body temperature has decreased over the last century at an average rate of 0.05 degrees Fahrenheit per decade.

Reason supporting the fact: One theory is that this change is due to advances in technology making thermometers more accurate over time.

Evidence supporting our conclusion: However, comparisons of body temperature data taken with similar thermometers across multiple decades showed the same gradual change. Additionally, the results are consistent across all demographic groups over this time period.

Conclusion: In light of these results, researchers now hypothesize that this decrease in average body temperature corresponds to a decrease in average metabolic rate.

There is a change in av. body temp. Researchers first thought that this change is due to advances in technology making thermometers more accurate over time. Later they thought that this decrease corresponds to a decrease in average metabolic rate.

Which of the following, if true about this geographic region, would most strengthen the researchers’ hypothesis?

We need something that validates that there is indeed a decrease in average metabolic rate in this particular geographic region.

(A) The effect noted in the study is consistent across adults and does not vary according to diet or activity level. [Tangential to the argument. Incorrect!]

(B) Increased inflammation can increase metabolic rate, and temperature-controlled environments that have become much more prevalent over the last century produce a reduction in inflammation. [This explains why there is no increase in metabolic rate. But we can still not conclude that a reduction in inflammation = a reduction in metabolic rate..... however, I will still keep it as a contender !!]

(C) Over the past century, increased research into thyroid disorders, such as hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism, has greatly improved medical science’s understanding of how hormones can influence a person’s metabolism. [Tangential to the argument. Incorrect!]

(D) In some instances, the researchers conducting the study had to rely on information from other studies and were not able to directly gather the data themselves. [Tangential to the argument. Incorrect!]

(E) The percentage of adults willing to participate in scientific studies has increased over the last century, as public perception of medical research has changed. [Tangential to the argument. Incorrect!]

Even though option B does not completely strengthen. However it does hint to a reduction in inflammation = a reduction in metabolic rate. It is the least worse of all the 5 choices.

The conclusion of the passage is : researchers now hypothesize that this decrease in average body temperature corresponds to a decrease in average metabolic rate.
Means that,
Average metabolic rate => decrease in body temperature

(A) The effect noted in the study is consistent across adults and does not vary according to diet or activity level.
we are looking for anything that is going to strenghthen the relationship between decreased average body temperature
and the decrease of metablic rate. Here the diet or activity level is not relevant
(B) Increased inflammation can increase metabolic rate, and temperature-controlled environments that have become much more prevalent over the last century produce a reduction in inflammation.
This is the correct answer,
(C) Over the past century, increased research into thyroid disorders, such as hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism, has greatly improved medical science’s understanding of how hormones can influence a person’s metabolism.

Here the idea is that hormones can influence a person's metabolism, but nothing can be related to the temperature, Wrong answer
(D) In some instances, the researchers conducting the study had to rely on information from other studies and were not able to directly gather the data themselves.
This is weakening the conclusion, stipulating that, the researchers should rely on other infos in order to draw a conclusion and hence cannot draw their actual conclusion, Wrong answer
(E) The percentage of adults willing to participate in scientific studies has increased over the last century, as public perception of medical research has changed.
No relationship bewtween metabolic rate and temperature, Wrong answer

Answer: B

A recent study has shown that, in a certain geographic region, average human body temperature has decreased over the last century at an average rate of 0.05 degrees Fahrenheit per decade. One theory is that this change is due to advances in technology making thermometers more accurate over time. However, comparisons of body temperature data taken with similar thermometers across multiple decades showed the same gradual change. Additionally, the results are consistent across all demographic groups over this time period. In light of these results, researchers now hypothesize that this decrease in average body temperature corresponds to a decrease in average metabolic rate.

Which of the following, if true about this geographic region, would most strengthen the researchers’ hypothesis?

(A) The effect noted in the study is consistent across adults and does not vary according to diet or activity level. --> Incorrect. only adults and diet or activity level reduces the scope.

(B) Increased inflammation can increase metabolic rate, and temperature-controlled environments that have become much more prevalent over the last century produce a reduction in inflammation. --> Correct. reduction in inflammation may decrease metabolic rate which in turn correspond to decrease in average body temperature. If this were to be true then it would strengthen researcher's hypothesis.

(C) Over the past century, increased research into thyroid disorders, such as hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism, has greatly improved medical science’s understanding of how hormones can influence a person’s metabolism. --> Incorrect. Improvement in Medical science's understanding of hormone influence is out of scope.

(D) In some instances, the researchers conducting the study had to rely on information from other studies and were not able to directly gather the data themselves. --> Incorrect. Whether some instances are applicable to the argument or not is questionable.

(E) The percentage of adults willing to participate in scientific studies has increased over the last century, as public perception of medical research has changed. --> Incorrect. Percentage of adults willing to participate is irrelevant to the argument.
