Hey guys i just downloaded the gmat software from gmat . com and took the gmat practice test.

I Scored a 510, i think it was a 36 Q and 32 R.

I was wondering how bad of a starting point this is? I havn't started studying at all for the gmat yet. I will be starting april-july and take the test august 1st-ish.

I need a high 600s for the part time programs im looking into. Thanks guys.

Background: Poli Sci. major. Havn't taken a math class since high school. So its been 5 years. I was suprised how much stuff i got wrong that was simple stuff that i just couldn't remember.

Also my sat score from HS was a 1300 (out of 1600). 650 Math 650 Verbal. Very little studying.

I think 510 is an okay starting point.
It doesn't matter where it start, the most important is where it finish ;)
And you have quite some time until august,

Check out the for starting GMAT thread from bb and learn where your weakness and start from there :)

The start point represents your present ability and a lot of improvement can be made in a period of 3 months. Therefore, don't pay attention to the score right now.
A raw score of 36 in quant represents the 43rd percentile and a raw score of 32 in verbal represents the 63rd percentile. Your first priority must be to learn basic concepts tested in the quant section of GMAT.

It is not bad. I started at 530 and ended with 750 but it all depends on how much effort/time you have to put in.

Let me add another thing - It is better than what quite a few people score without studying at all. If you study seriously, you will see some major improvement in the first few weeks.

Provided this is your first encounter with the format, types of questions, peculiarities, etc. of the exam, this score is absolutely natural, it is not a bit indicative of your upside potential - the latter is only limited by the number 800 =)

That said, just like anyone else - you have a tough journey ahead of you - learning strategies, refreshing old concepts, learning shortcuts, etc.

Provided find a way to trick yourself into being highly motivated - 800 is the limit =)
