Hello,

I am currently studying for my GMAT on August 19th. I purchased my GMAT books awhile back (a year ago) and I'm currently using Manhattan 5th edition and the OG 2015 (all three). I've noticed a new version of Manhattan and the OG has been released. Is studying with the Manhattan 5th edition books and the OG 2015 okay if I'm taking the test in roughly three weeks? I'm willing to purchase the new OG's (all three of them), however I really don't want to spend another $400 or so on an Manhattan set. The main reason why I'm asking is because I'm scared that I'll spend all this time studying and the content change or something. :?

Also I'm about 1/5th of the way through the Manhattan set, and averaging 4-5 hours a day of studying. I haven't done any practice tests or a diagnostic test to see where I'm currently at, because I can tell I'm overall weak in every topic. My plan is to (hopefully) finish the Manhattan set, get through most of the problems in the OG's, then a day or two before my GMAT take a diagnostic to see where I stand. Does that sound okay? The main reason why I don't want to do a diagnostic is because it takes up my study time and I know I won't receive the score I would like, so I would be discouraged in the end.

Thank you for all the help, it's greatly appreciated!
Brandon

Hi Brandon,

The versions of the OG and MGMAT books that you're studying with are fine (there have NOT been any major changes to the GMAT since those books were published).

Based on what you've described about your studies so far, I have some suggestions and a few questions:

You really MUST take a FULL-LENGTH practice CAT sometime soon (possible this weekend). Without having a 'baseline' score for comparison purposes, we really have no idea how 'effective' your studies are, or even if you're focused on the proper subjects. We need to know your current strengths and weaknesses; the only way to truly define them is to take a FULL CAT (including the Essay and IR sections) under realistic, test-like conditions. Once you have that set of scores, you should report back here and we can talk through any adjustments that need to be made to your study plan.

1) What is your goal score?
2) When are you planning to apply to Business School?
3) Do you know which Schools you plan to apply to?
4) Do you have the flexibility to push back your Test Date?

There's definitely no need to buy a new set of books. We certainly have made some improvements in 6th edition, but 5th edition has more than enough material to keep you busy from now until test day.

However, waiting until right before the test to take a practice test is a bad idea--a very bad idea. Taking practice tests is a big part of the improvement process. You need to see how you perform under test conditions, and then you need to take steps to make each new test go better. Usually, this involves weeks of practice in between, but if you are taking the test on 8/19, there's no time for that. You should be taking a practice test every week during this final stretch! For many people, managing timing and making good decisions about which problems to guess on is one of the most important areas for improvement. You can simulate a bit of this through timed sets, but there's nothing like a practice CAT to show you what you need to do to get to your score. Besides, research shows that testing is a great way to consolidate learning.

Don't hold off on taking a test because you're nervous about what your score will look like. You have a much better chance of getting a great score on the real test if you start testing now! Start with one of our exams. They have strong diagnostic tools that will help you to hone in on areas for improvement. Over the following three weeks, take one more of ours and the two free official CATs from mba.com. Good luck!

I've been reviewing with the Manhattan set for 3 weeks now and have just started doing practice problems. I did problems 1-60 for quant. problems and I'm currently doing data sufficiency problems. However, for the 1-60 quant. questions I did, I only missed 12 questions, and for the DS problems I'm currently doing, I've only missed one question (which is odd because I've barely touched DS and my exam is this Wednesday :? ).

Are the questions in the OG 15/16 in order of difficulty? If so, should I skip around in the book? Most sections have a lot of practice problems that I know I won't be able to finish in time, and I would like to study the most efficient way possible.

Thank you,
Brandon

Update: I just read the detailed OG 2016 analysis forum post and found out that the new book is in order of difficulty. Since my exam is this Wednesday, how should I take on doing the practice problems (I highly doubt I can do all by then).

My goal score is 600+. I can do most of the "easy" questions and haven't looked at the medium/hard questions. Which range of questions best reflect a score in the 600's?

My plan is -
Yesterday: Quant. problems (I completed roughly 1-60/230)
Today: DS (I will hopefully completed 100, and then do more quant problems.)
Monday: RC (/139) & CR problems (/124)
Tuesday: SC (/140), IR (just found out the OG doesn't have sample questions, however doing Quant. should prepare me enough)
Wednesday: GMAT Exam day

Hi BrandonBlah,

Since your original post in this thread goes back over 3 weeks, and there wasn't any follow-up until today, I'd like to know a bit more about what you've been doing during that time:

1) Did you take any FULL-LENGTH CATs? If so, then how did you score (including the Quant and Verbal Scaled Scores)?
2) Do you have a sense of any particular strong or weak categories?
3) When are you planning to apply to Business School?

I took the practice test and scored around a 430 overall. I retook one a week ago and scored around a 540 or so. I'm overall decent at everything, and now I'm just reviewing topics. I plan on applying to business schools in late October, so worse comes to worse, I will retake the test in September if I don't do well.

Hi BrandonBlah,

You mentioned scoring 540 on a CAT; I have a few questions about that CAT:

1) Was this a CAT that you had already used?
2) Did you take the ENTIRE CAT (including the Essay and IR sections)?
3) What were the Quant and Verbal Scaled Scores?

Hi everyone,

I have the 5th MGMAT study guide from a friend for free, however I am not sure if after all that time it is still up to date. Has the GMAT changed? Can I score 700+ with it?

Thanks a lot for your help.

Best,
Mateo
