Hello everybody,
After around 4 weeks of study, took my GMATPrep test 1 yesterday and got a reality shock after I got a 560. This is way down from highest I could reach in my practice tests (690) 2 years back which made me lose my enthusiasm and made me go away for some time to improve upon basics (which didn't happen eventually)... Given average undergrad, I need to get a 730+ on actual exam to stand a fair chance for a top college.
I came back this time and started by scheduling the exam (for motivation levels) for 23rd Sept... studied OGs for 4-5 weeks and got above result in this test.. I'm thinking of rescheduling the same to 4-6 weeks later to get some more time to prepare as I know I can do better... I got a 660 (don't remember exactly) in one of the Princeton tests I took in week 2 after refreshing the review material.
So far, before taking the test, I have completed OG Quant and OG Verbal 4th edition (timed) with 90% and 70% accuracy respectively and I had an idea that I'm not yet ready but a 560 was way too low then I expected...Quant results were not very unsatisfactory as I know my weaknesses ( including several careless errors which I'm working on) but Verbal results were really depressing.
To highlight my weaknesses...Here are the breakups I got from the test..
Quant (44):
PS: Total 20, 7 Wrong (3 Careless , 3 Concept and 1 scary long problem which I guessed..)
DS: Total 17, 5 Wrong (Most errors choosing between C and E)
Verbal (24): (Total Disaster)
CR: Total 10, 05 Wrong (I generally run 70% accuracy on timed OG problems)
RC: Total 13, 03 Wrong (My worse original enemies, originally 40-50% accuracy but with practice, I see it increasing)
SC: Total 18, 11 wrong (Major shocker, I generally see 70% accuracy on this and this blew me off in the test).
My SC performance in the test was a shocker...I know I need improvement in SCs but I always ran 70-75% accuracy in the same (which decreased with speed)...I thought I was getting better in SCs but obviously that's not the case...I think I need to get back to basics of grammar as at present I use POE by spot checking in answer choices and try pulling the entire sentence together which, seems, is not efficient as well as takes more time. Is it possible to follow any method for SC to get a sure 90% or more accuracy?? Is learning EVERYTHING in GMAT grammar essential to tackle these SC problems? As I see some answers on these forums, they start with rule and logic first in giving justification
for e.g.
one explanation.. compared to is used for comparing dissimilar things. hence C & E out.
another one....... A: incorrect: "which is being" -- beware "is being" -- we generally want to limit the number of "to be" verbs, and here we have two, back-to-back
As I mentioned, I do not used highlighted way and by default go to POE by looking for abnormalities which are jumping out in sentences and choices. So far, I was in assumption that this was working for me but obviously this was not the case in test yesterday where I probably fall prey to GMAT tactics. Do I need to learn ALL sentence formation grammar rules to improvise upon my SC score?
CR was another disappointment where I have no issues in understanding the argument but generally get stuck in answer choices and it takes time. Any suggestions?
RC was little relief as this was my weakest area, last time and even while I began preparing several weeks before...applied Gins RC techniques in part and results were good...Are there any ways to improve this even further? Also, with a long brutal RC passage and several tough SC questions in the middle of the test, I wasted some time and had to rush last 5 CR & 1 SC questions in around a minute each, getting 4 of them wrong...for verbal, I'm using timing as 75/1, 55/12, 35/23, 15/34, 5/40, 2/41 and couldn't keep up with timing towards the end, probably because I spent too much time on figuring out SCs towards the middle...
Are there any suggestions out there to effectively managing time and accuracy both?
With this performance, I'm little bit down on enthusiasm but at the same time, I'm hopeful that I'd be able to improve on the score by rescheduling the exam to mid Nov and buying 4-6 weeks of more study time..
Appreciate if I can get suggestions on how I should proceed and also whether rescheduling the exam is a wise thing to do or not!!!
