We address the myth of the "get the first X questions myth" here: https://www.manhattanprep.com/gmat/blog ... ions-myth/

Here's the problem: even if it's true and you will do better if you get the first 10 questions right, what are you going to do about it? It's almost impossible to achieve that on an adaptive test, and the only way to try for it would be to spend extra time up front, setting yourself up for a devastating timeout later on. I see the depressing results of this all the time in my work with our Post Exam Assessment team. To make matters worse, most people cannot significantly increase their accuracy by spending extra time. A problem that you spend 3+ minutes on is probably a problem you are getting wrong.

So, long story short: don't try to get the first 10 problems right. Do your best work across the exam, staying conscious of time, and if you get stuck on a tough problem, let it go with a clear conscience, knowing that even a 700 scorer is going to miss about 40% of the problems!

Hi,

1. The initial 10-15 questions are very important as they determine the difficulty level of the questions, so it is recommended that the test takers take enough time to attempt these initial questions.

2. The section begins with medium difficulty level questions & how a test taker attempts the initial questions determines the difficulty level of the questions that follow. There is no set format in which the difficulty level of the questions is determined. The GMAT is a Computer Adaptive Test, so there is no fixed order in which the questions would appear.

Good Luck!!!

Manya, this is not quite accurate. All of the problems determine the difficulty of subsequent problems. The test is constantly adjusting its estimate of your performance. This has been tested and borne out repeatedly. For instance, a colleague of mine intentionally missed the first 7 questions on an official GMATPrep exam and was still able to get a 99th percentile score. Just do your best on the exam as a whole, and don't get into timing trouble worrying about the first 10.

The first ten questions are as important as any other questions in the GMAT. I have attached GMAC's answer to this myth.

What is true is that not completing the test will lead to a severe penalty, and my advice is to be always prepared to steer away from very hard questions(unless you are targeting a Q50/Q51) and get to the end of the test.

Hello nphsingh,

It is true that there the first ten questions are important. As the test is computer adaptive, your success on the first questions will determine the level of subsequent questions. So you wouldn't see the test begin with 800 level questions. You'd be more likely to start at a lower level and move up depending on your accuracy.

I hope that helps!
