Hi Experts

Thanks for your answers on GMAT Club. It has been a great resource to learn. Tagging MartyTargetTestPrep KarishmaB GMATNinja ExpertsGlobal5 Sajjad1994 generis bb mikemcgarry DmitryFarber TommyWallach ReedArnoldMPREP for this.

I am writing this question to seek some help regarding to my GMAT verbal preparation. My previous GMAT scores are below:

Attempt 1: 690 (Q47, V37) - August '22
Attempt 2: 620 (Q50, V24) - November '22 (2 days ago)

After my GMAT attempt 1, I could recognise from my ESR that I lagged behind in SC with a 50% accuracy. I had a good accuracy (80%+) on both CR and RC. I worked on improving my SC skills, solving all the available official questions from GMAC (including verbal review, verbal advance question bank, practice question - 1, and practice question - 2, all 6 official mocks). I prepared untimed, spending at least 5-10 mins with each question. Within 3 months, my SC accuracy, measured untimed, went up to 80%.

I was confident enough to hit a V40 this time and booked my 2nd attempt. During this attempt, it seemed like the questions were way harder than the questions I had practiced. I got nervous, I couldn't manage my time properly, and I ended up with a shocking V24 score! When I skimmed through my ESR, I could see my SC accuracy was again 50% along with a huge drop in my CR and RC accuracy (~75%).

Now, after exhausting all the official materials along with 3 test prep materials (TTP, GMAT Whiz, and MGMAT mocks), which were really helpful in boosting my understanding of the verbal concepts. But, now I am literally clueless on how to boost my verbal score. I am giving my 3rd attempt of GMAT after 2-weeks from now.

I prepared a list of errors, skimming through my previous MGMAT and official mocks and I figured out that I am doing the same mistakes repetitively even after being aware. Doing the same mistakes repeatedly seems like an ongoing self-sabotaging loop, which is going on and on and I am not able to stop the loop. In all of my timed CAT attempts, I am getting a 50% accuracy in SC. In untimed SC attempts I usually get an 80% accuracy. If this can be improved, I believe I can improve my overall verbal performance (V40 is my target score).

It would be extremely helpful if you can please share any advise, suggestion, or resources on how I should approach the next 2-weeks and boost my verbal score.

Thank you so much!

~SP

Hi there--it's very hard to diagnose from something like this. But I would ask a few questions of you:

1). How often do you find yourself reading the entirety of the original sentence?

2). Do you read sentences top to bottom, left to right in the hopes of catching a mistake, or do you feel like you're following clues to *find* mistakes?

3). How fast can you determine what is being tested in the sentence (in particular: Subjects-verb, structure, modifiers, parallelism, comparisons, pronouns)?

4). How important are conjunctions to you?

5). Can you explain how to recognize different modifiers, and what 'thing' each modifies structurally?

These videos might help:

Sentence Structure:

Finding Clues in SC:

I take the verbal section:

For that last one, pause the video at each SC questions and do the sentence yourself. RECORD YOURSELF, speaking aloud WHAT you're noticing and thinking about. Then, watch me do the sentence. What did I notice? Was my approach more efficient or less efficient than yours? Why? What words matter most in the sentence? How well did I find them? How well did you find them?

People tend to under-practice SC process--how they are doing the questions--and focus just on memorizing a bunch of grammar rules. But that's maybe only 20% of the battle.

Thanks for your response MartyTargetTestPrep

While doing TTP questions, my accuracy in SC was around 72% and modifier was my weak spot as you correctly pointed out. Right after that I worked on boosting my ability to understand the meaning of the sentences and I got better at solving modifier questions, boosting my SC accuracy to ~80% overall. At the same time, I have practiced less RC and CR questions after my first attempt in order to focus more on SC.

I am sharing the data points from my GMAC Practice Question - 1 and 2 untimed attempts. Hopefully it'll be a good enough sample set. I have attempted the OG and Verbal review questions multiple times, so I don't have to correct data available for those.

SC Hard - 78% (40/51)
SC Medium - 81% (45/55)
SC Easy - 77.7% (14/18)

CR Hard - 87% (21/24)
CR Medium - 96% (25/26)
CR Easy - NA

RC Hard - 72%

I didn't practice RC and CR easy questions after my first attempt. Please let me know if anything else.

Thank you!
Your CR accuracy is right where it needs to be.

Your SC accuracy is a little too low.

Your TTP analytics say that your time per SC question was about 3 minutes, whereas you were spending close to 4 minutes on each CR question. Do you think it would help to spend more time fully analyzing each SC practice question?

Ii mean, are you sure about your choice when you complete an SC practice question? Maybe you have to spend more time on the last two choices and get better at picking up on the key differences that make one choice correct and all the others incorrect.

When you were practicing SC on TTP, your accuracy wasn't high enough and I just wonder whether you need to dig into each practice question more.

Practice verbal section under timed conditions. Most people would perform far better on Verbal if they had unlimited time with them. The challenge is to do each SC question in about a minute and each CR question within 2-3 mins. RC is a throw of dice as far as timing is concerned - you may wrap one up quickly if you understand the subject matter or you may get thrown off for a good 9-10 mins if you do not.
In SC, what I suggest is to read the sentence, understand what it is trying to say, break it down into its major components (identify the clauses and modifiers) and then focus on decision points in the options. It works especially well when the entire sentence is not underlined. When the entire sentence is underlined, we usually need to find the structure of each option which does take a little longer.

Here is an idiom list for Sentence Correction. May boost your SC a bit. For RC, getting familiar with how INFERENCE questions work may be helpful as well.
