The DDX Spread Process That Powered My Jump From 635 to 715 in 4 Days!
First, What’s a “DDX Spread”?
DDX is short for differential diagnosis. It’s how a doctor figures out “what’s wrong?” one step at a time, where each new diagnosis is based on the symptoms that showed up after the last step.
Let me explain with an example. A patient visits a doctor. The doctor checks the symptoms, prescribes some medicines and sends the patient home. Two weeks later, the patient isn’t cured. A few new symptoms have appeared, and some of the old ones haven’t fully gone away. So the patient goes back.
This time, the doctor’s diagnosis builds on the first one. It considers the new symptoms, and also the fact that some old symptoms didn’t respond to the medicine. Because it’s based on this mix of old and new findings, the second diagnosis is different from the first. Hence, “differential”.
Throughout my 3.5 months with this thing called the GMAT, I ran this same DDX process after every practice session, every quiz, every sectional and every mock. I’d look at what new gaps or learnings showed up. Those were my symptoms, and I treated them in the next session.
So what does “spread” mean? Back to the doctor. Every visit ends with a prescription that says what’s wrong and what the remedy is. That prescription is what I call the “spread”: the latest set of existing gaps I found in my GMAT game, plus the remedy I planned for each one.
Put together, when I say
“cover the DDX spread”, I simply mean: in your next practice session, quiz, sectional or mock, focus on fixing the gaps and applying the remedies from your latest DDX.
A Live Example of a DDX
Like many of you, I had a chronic problem with “silly mistakes”. You know the kind. You miss the word “different” in a min-max Quant problem, or you forget that the question only asked for even factors. Here’s how my DDX for this annoying habit evolved over a few sectionals and mocks.
Once an issue is fixed, drop it from your spread. A DDX spread must stay lean and only contain the things you haven’t perfected yet. Have faith that your instincts won’t let you down on the stuff you’ve already fixed, and don’t waste energy worrying “what if the error comes back?”
What should stand out for you is how my DDX kept digging deeper into the same issue with every sectional and mock. No error is truly “careless”. Every careless or conceptual error has a real process or knowledge gap behind it. Going one level deeper with each DDX helps you pinpoint exactly what the root problem is, why it happens, and when and where it shows up. Fix that, and you fix a whole class of errors, which could add maybe 2 points to your section score right away!
What About Error Log Reviews? (Spoiler: DDX Spreads Beat Them Any Day) I had an
error log of roughly 2,200 questions. Number of times I reviewed it in 3.5 months? Exactly zero.
Don’t get me wrong,
error log data is worth tracking. It shows you which topics you consistently struggle with, and whether your accuracy on those topics is going up over time. What I don’t believe is that reviewing an
error log can reveal your real underlying conceptual or habit problems.
It’s also just impractical. Take my numbers. 68% accuracy across 2,200 questions means 704 mistakes in 3.5 months, or roughly 100 mistakes every 2 weeks. So am I supposed to spend 2–3 days every fortnight going through my last 100 errors? Would you even remember your thought process and mental state for each of them? A dataset that big is exhausting, and way too noisy to give you any deep insights.
What do I suggest instead? DDX spreads. After every quiz (or after every 3–4 practice sessions), draw up the DDX spread you’ll cover in the next one. This keeps your learning and improvement dynamic. And since every new spread only contains your current gaps, not your historical ones, you never have to dig through a noisy list of 100 errors to figure out what needs your attention RIGHT NOW.
DDX Priorities
Decide for yourself which mistakes are “acceptable” and which are “unacceptable”. Don’t try to fix every single gap or learn the technique for every 805+ Quant question. If you try to fix everything, you’ll end up fixing most things at a surface level instead of fixing them deeply and permanently.
For example, getting a genuinely difficult question wrong is an
acceptable mistake. A silly arithmetic error is an
unacceptable one.
Unacceptable mistakes always get top priority on your DDX spread!!!Acceptable mistakes give you two options. You can use them to learn a new concept or technique. Or you can make a judgement call: “This is too complicated. If it shows up on the test, I’m best off guessing quickly and moving on.” Don’t feel bad about ignoring some acceptable mistakes entirely. That’s not laziness. It’s a strategic decision about what’s in scope and what isn’t. Even when you do learn something new from an acceptable mistake, it only goes on your spread as a secondary note.
The main goal is always to have as few unacceptable mistakes as possible.Here’s a question I got wrong in a sectional. I looked at the solution approach at a high level and decided: “Nope, ignoring this. I’m not overloading myself by learning it. If something like this shows up in a mock or the exam, my only goal is to move on in under 90 seconds.”

This is a DDX I made in July, in the middle of my prep, after taking multiple quizzes (6–12 questions each) across all sections.

This was my DDX spread on the day of my exam, before I reached the test center. (Block control is explained in Part 2.)
Data Insights (DI)• Block control
• Graphs/Tables: ROBW (Read Once, But Well). Watch out for percentage traps and overlapping sets traps.
• MSR (Multi-Source Reasoning): a time saver either way. If it’s too hard, you skip it. If it’s easy, the average time across its 3 questions will be under 2 mins. Complex? Guess, move on, save time. Not complex? ROBW, trust your instincts, don’t second-guess.
• TPA (Two-Part Analysis): ROBW. Complex? Skip. Not complex? Focus, solve, stay calm!
Quant• Block control
• Stay calm, read well, trust your logic and calculation speed. Don’t rush reading the problem.
• Once the approach is fixed, be careful not to miss constraints.
• AVOID UNFORCED ERRORS
Verbal• Trust your instincts
• Look for logical connections
• ELIMINATION IS YOUR BEST BET
• VISUALIZE!!
