Also I’m sorry for not sending my profile earlier for you to estimate better and I’m not sure if this is too lengthy

Hi, I’m Surya Vamsi. I’m planning my MBA applications and would appreciate an evaluation of my overall profile, competitiveness at top global programs, and areas I should strengthen or position carefully.

A quick overview of my profile:

Academics

* B.Tech in Computer Science & Engineering from SRM Institute of Science and Technology
* Graduated with First Class with Distinction, 79.12%

Professional experience – ~5.5 years by matriculation

I currently work at American Express in Credit & Fraud Risk, where I’ve progressed across three substantially different roles spanning international risk/data governance, enterprise transformation, and US banking product strategy.

Current role – Senior Associate (Assistant Manager), Product Strategy & Delivery, US Banking

* Drive end-to-end risk strategy for US digital banking across 20+ initiatives
* Initiatives I have led have delivered $25M+ of my team’s $80M+ total business impact, across fraud prevention, approval optimisation and portfolio strategy
* Led standardisation across 4 banking products and 5 customer journeys, coordinating a four-member team and eliminating 50%+ of duplicate decision logic
* Worked with senior US business leaders to shape credit and fraud strategies, with 5 strategy enhancements adopted to support product launches and next-generation model migrations
* Identified an organisational risk-oversight gap and co-built RADAR, an AI prototype that reduced manual assessment time by 90%+; selected as a finalist to pitch to an internal VP innovation panel
* Mentored a summer intern who independently delivered three major initiatives, increased team throughput by 25%, and ultimately received a full-time return offer

Previous role – Federated Data Office, Credit & Fraud Risk

* Led enterprise data-standards compliance across four risk teams and three enterprise teams, coordinating approximately 100 stakeholders
* Achieved 100% compliance across 150 critical data elements
* Led a three-person matrix team that accelerated a 12-month governance roadmap to 8 months
* Built a data-quality framework that moved issue capture from 0% to 100% across Credit & Fraud Risk within six months, with 40% of identified issues permanently resolved within a year
* Secured approval from the Enterprise Data Committee and presented progress in business-unit reviews to the Chief Information Officer
* Received both Star of the Quarter and Analyst of the Quarter recognition

Earlier American Express role – Global Account Monitoring

* Joined a three-person founding team responsible for building controls around previously unmonitored credit-bureau data across 17 international markets
* Developed a common risk framework across those markets and worked with Chief Credit Officers and product leaders
* Built an Australian customer-selection framework that reduced bureau inquiries from 32% to the 25% regulatory cap, in partnership with Equifax Australia and Decision Science
* Promoted in 18 months versus the standard 24-month cycle
* Received Analyst of the Quarter

Before Amex, I worked at Tata Consultancy Services in Product Engineering on the Travelport+ modernisation program. I was promoted within 12 months, stepped in as interim Scrum Master for a quarter, and my team received TCS’s 2021 Best Team recognition within Travel, Transportation & Hospitality.

Leadership & community
Outside work, I have tried to maintain sustained rather than one-off involvement:

* Volunteer instructor and mentor through Amex’s Prayaas program, teaching English and logical reasoning to 30–35 corporate security personnel annually (~100 so far), some of whom later cleared public-service examinations
* Captain of a 50-member recreational cricket club in Bangalore
* Raised ₹51,612 for children’s education through Today’s Kalam Foundation and continued volunteering for six months beyond my formal internship
* At university, grew a student organisation from 10 to 50 members and led community initiatives, including a project that built bottle lamps for 25 homes

Personal interests / additional dimensions

* Building a personal library of 100+ books, many collected while travelling
* Learning Sanskrit with the long-term goal of reading the Upanishads in the original
* Speedcubing – approximately 22-second solve
* Built a collection of 1,000+ miniature cars over several years

The broad narrative I’m hoping to communicate is one of increasing scope and responsibility: starting in technology/product engineering, moving into international risk and data governance, then enterprise transformation, and now owning strategy and delivery for US banking risk initiatives with measurable commercial impact.

I would particularly value your assessment of:

1. How strong this profile is for top US and European MBA programs.
2. Which parts of the profile are genuinely differentiated versus simply strong execution.
3. Whether my progression at American Express and the breadth across risk, data, strategy and product come through as a coherent leadership trajectory.
4. Any weaknesses or potential concerns an admissions committee may identify.
5. How you would recommend positioning my professional narrative and extracurricular story to maximise the strength of the application.

Would love a candid assessment of the profile and the level of schools at which you think I would be competitive.
Wow! This is fantastic!
1. This is a great profile of increased responsibility and leadership
2. Working across government, enterprise and banking (assuming consumer) - you have a unique perspective of how each of these are different ------ not sure what your post-grad goal is, but i’m sure there is a way to bring this in.
3. Yes! coming through loud and clear
4. I think you mentioned your GRE is 323-326 ? not sure how it is a range... but nonetheless, when combined with your background I think you have a compelling profile that could overcome a slightly lower than average INDIAN GRE score - you can stand out in the Indian applicant pool.
5. This all depends on your goals... share them and we can connect the dots - here or you can schedule a time to chat here https://calendly.com/jenifert-aringo/gm ... l-with-jen

Quick idea - after working in various clinical departments, you noticed inconsistencies that could have helped different departments run smoother. Now, you’d like to take that to the next level and help companies solve these types of issues as a consultant.
Thank you so much , will put these suggestions into action.

Profile Review for Full time MBA: LBS, Wharton, Booth
UG: BBA from globally unknown, but country top tier university. BBA in finance (GPA 3.8)
CFA Charterholder
GMAT FE: 705, Q87 D86 V82
IELTS: 7.5

5 years + experience: Finance professional with experience across corporate credit risk, capital markets research, and financial assurance. Currently working in corporate banking, focusing on credit, operational, and legal risk assessment, transaction structuring, portfolio monitoring, and presenting recommendations to senior credit committees. Previously worked in capital markets research, covering fixed income and equities and developing investment ideas for proprietary and client portfolios. Earlier experience includes financial assurance, IFRS-based audits, internal controls, and business process assessments.

ECAs:
Tutored finance related subjects for university students and math/physics for school students
I like the spread of the schools - US & UK
You have great stats - strong GPA (were you top of the class?), GMAT and CFA (that’s awesome).
This will help with lesser known school brand and reaasure adcom your well qualified academically.
Experience is strong and ECs in finance is awesome = you are passionate about this!
I’d go for these schools. You can have backups - Oxford, Tuck, Duke... Cornell, NYU (location and still prestigious enough)

Thank you so much, this is really helpful and reassuring.

One small clarification on point 2: it’s data governance rather than government. My experience has essentially progressed from technology/product engineering at TCS → international credit-risk and data governance at Amex → enterprise data transformation → and now US banking product/risk strategy. So I’ve had the opportunity to see financial services from the technology, data, risk, product and strategy sides, which is something I’m hoping to make a central part of my story.

My immediate post-MBA goal is to move into management/strategy consulting, ideally MBB or a leading Tier-2 firm, with a financial-services focus. I’d like to work across banks, payments companies and fintechs on areas such as banking/payments strategy, digital transformation, product and portfolio strategy, and risk/decisioning. Longer term, I want to move from driving transformation within one institution to helping shape large-scale financial-services transformation across multiple organisations and markets.

And yes — to clarify the GRE point, 323 is my current actual score. I’m preparing for another attempt now and believe I can get to around 326 in the next attempt.

This is actually why I was asking about R1 vs R2. If I can get to ~326 in time for the remaining R1 deadlines, I could apply this round with that score. But if I believe another few weeks of preparation could realistically push me above 330, I’m wondering whether the stronger strategy would be to hold the broader set of applications for R2 and apply with the higher score instead.

Given that you feel the rest of the profile can stand out within the Indian applicant pool, I’d be very interested in your view on that trade-off specifically: would you prioritise the R1 timing with a ~326 GRE, or the potential benefit of a 330+ GRE in R2?

That’s really the decision I’m trying to make right now.

I’d only apply to R1 schools if you’d be willing to give up a deposit for a different school in Round 2. They will only give you ~3-4 weeks to accept and deposit. So its pointless if you aren’t willing to either make the deposit to that school in hopes of R2 outcomes OR if you’d not be able to afford to lose the deposit on the R1 schoo to put down for the R2 school.

MBA Profile Evaluation Request
Hi, I’m Akshat Srivastava. I’m planning my MBA applications and would appreciate a candid evaluation of my overall profile, my competitiveness at my target programs, and where I should strengthen or position things carefully.

Academics
B.Tech in Chemistry, IIT Kanpur (Y13 batch) — admitted via JEE, all-India rank ~6,000
Graduated with a 5.6/10 CGPA
GMAT & Target Programs
Preparing for the GMAT Focus, targeting 735 with a floor of 715
Mock scores have moved from 625 to 695 (Q86/V87/DI80) — a 70-point jump — with remaining gaps in Data Insights and harder-band Critical Reasoning
Primary target: ISB PGP. Among Indian programs I’m otherwise only considering IIM-A and IIM-B
International shortlist: Stanford GSB, INSEAD, ESADE (MSc in Innovation & Entrepreneurship), UCI Merage (MIE)
I’ve previously been admitted to — and turned down — offers from IIT-K, XLRI, and IIM Shillong while working toward being ready for this shortlist

Professional Experience
Current — Entrepreneur-in-Residence / Program Manager, CityData (GovTech startup, reporting to the CEO)

Core owner of CityFlow, a real-time crowd-management platform deployed in Varanasi, which won the Toyota Mobility Foundation’s Sustainable Cities Challenge ($500K cash prize)
Led the sensor deployment plan for the city: 100 sensors across 10 circles plus 25 public LCD displays
Previous — Senior Ops/Strategy Manager, TechEagle (Jul 2023 – Dec 2024)
Joined post-CampusHaat to build structured operating experience inside a larger organization
Founding — Co-Founder & Managing Director, CampusHaat (2017–2023)
Co-founded and ran the company from the ground up at IIT Kanpur through to profitability
Stepped back in 2023; the company continues operating profitably today
Parallel — Freelance EIR / Growth & Ops Consultant (Jan 2025–present, ongoing)
Clients: JetLearn (K–12 edtech), GetBeds, and AWL Supply
Scope spans growth, operations, product, strategy, and fundraising
Venture-building — EIR Club (concept stage)
An AI-operator talent marketplace concept — credentialing "AI-era operators" for placement, rather than a training program
Applied to AJVC; rejected at Round 2 on TAM grounds, continued working in that.
Positioned as an early, self-funded proof of concept for a longer-term goal (below), not a full-time venture
Extracurricular & Personal Dimensions
Long-standing Harry Potter engagement across formats (books, audio, film); as an undergrad, co-organized and coordinated an HP-themed freshers’ party at IIT Kanpur with five batchmates
Developed a personal intellectual framework — working title "Dimensional Projection Hypothesis" — bridging higher-dimensional physics, consciousness, and philosophy, written up as a formatted paper

The Narrative I’m Hoping to Communicate
I want the throughline to read as a deliberate, long-term path toward entrepreneurship rather than a series of unrelated moves: co-founding and running CampusHaat to profitability as a student, then deliberately choosing structured roles at TechEagle and now CityData to build operating discipline I didn’t get as a first-time founder — while continuing to consult, build, and explore new ventures (freelance EIR work, EIR Club) in parallel. The MBA is a real, near-term goal, but it’s ultimately a step toward a bigger one: eventually building an academy that trains and backs future entrepreneurs — a "player-coach" model, geography- and funding-agnostic.

What I’d Value Your Assessment On
How competitive is this profile for ISB PGP specifically, and for the rest of the shortlist above?
Given the mix of founder, corporate, and consulting experience, does the trajectory read as coherent and additive — or as scattered across too many threads?
How should the venture-building work (EIR Club, freelance consulting) be positioned: as evidence of entrepreneurial conviction, or as a distraction from a single clear narrative?
What weaknesses or concerns would an admissions committee likely flag (e.g., the undergraduate CGPA, the number of parallel commitments right now)?
How should I position the personal/extracurricular material — the Harry Potter freshers’-party story, the Dimensional Projection Hypothesis, — to strengthen the application rather than dilute it?
Given the "academy for entrepreneurs" is the real long-term goal and the MBA is a means to it, how explicit should that be in essays versus staying as private motivation?
Would love a candid read on the profile and the level of schools I’m genuinely competitive at.

Great work experience! It is very strong and aligns well with these schools. These programs likely will offer schoolarship as they are a bit more safe. You could try for schools in T20 or schools with GMAT waivers or don’t require it - UCLA could be an awesome choice.
