Hello Everyone,

I am going to give my GMAT on 24th June 2019 and am expecting a really low score after giving multiple mocks whose range was 400-470. However, I don't wish to cancel or reschedule my appointment as I want to experience it first hand. Now I know that it is most likely that I will be giving a 2nd attempt and I had some doubts regarding the same.

1. While selecting the 5 schools before the test, should I choose certain schools in the first attempt and choose some others in my next? Is there a rule that in your next attempt you can't select new schools?

2. After the test, do I get to see the score first and then decide to cancel/keep the score, or is it the other way round? In that case if I choose to keep a really low score, it will get sent to those 5 schools. Even though I will give my 200% in the next attempt, will the initial low score hamper my chances in any way?

3. Even if I just don't select any schools before the test knowing that I am going to achieve my best in this attempt, and then I choose to keep my score; then in the next attempt if I choose 5 schools for the 1st time and I do choose to keep the better score, will the old one also get sent by default?

I am just clarifying certain doubts in advance so that I don't jeopardize anything due to negligence.

Thanks in advance.
Hi SMS402,

1. You can select any program you want. Just keep in mind that once you select a program, it will receive scores from that attempt and from any other attempts in the last 5 years that you did not cancel. It will not, however, receive scores from future attempts without your authorization. This means that if you send your first score to a particular program, it will not automatically receive your second score. You must choose that program again on (or after) your second attempt.

I suggest that you go through this post to see how this works.

2. Yes, you will be shown your score before you are asked to confirm (or cancel) your score. You can even cancel your score from home within a 72 hour window (this is a paid service). If your score is very low and you don't want your target school(s) to see it, just cancel it. You can reinstate a cancelled score, but you can't cancel your score after that 72 hour window.

I don't think most schools really care too much about anything other than your highest score, but a very low score can't really help you, so you probably won't benefit from keeping it on your record.

3. Yes, the 5 programs that you choose on your second attempt will see every single official score that you have (limited to attempts in the last 5 years). They will not be able to see any scores that you cancelled.

All the best.

Hi AjiteshArun,

Thanks for your reply.
However, I just need to confirm whether every attempt involves a new set of 5 free score reports to be sent to schools, or not.
Also, even though a bit unrelated, in every attempt a new digital photograph and palm vein will be taken right? I am only asking so as to confirm whether the photo gets sent along with score reports to the schools. In that case, better look the best on test day:)
Moreover, will keeping my extremely low score and then getting a high score in the next attempt work in my favour when adcoms review my profile? As in showcasing grit or determination, or am I better off cancelling the score in the 1st attempt itself if it is a 100+ points below my target score?

A liitle more guidance would be much appreciated. Thanks again.

Hi SMS402,

1) You can select any schools you’d like. If you want to select the exact same schools for your second exam, that is totally acceptable.

2) You do get to see the score before you decide to keep or cancel it. If you keep the score, then it will be visible to any schools to which you plan to apply. Thus, if you are well under your goal score, you likely should cancel your score, as that score won’t provide any value. Remember, you always have the option to reinstate your canceled score at a later date in case you ever need it.

3) Yes, if you keep your original score, it will be included on your official score report that is sent out to schools.

With all that said, if you need any general advice on how to improve your GMAT quant and verbal skills, feel free to reach back out. Good luck!

Hi SMS402,

1. Yes, each and every attempt gives you the option to select (up to) 5 programs, and your selections can be completely different if you want. Keep in mind that the programs you selected on your first attempt won't automatically get access to your second score though.

2. Pearson retains your information (photo and palm vein pattern), but they will take a new digital photograph and a new palm scan, for security reasons. Although your photo is sent to the programs that you authorize to receive your scores, you don't have to worry about looking your best. :)

3. A very low score is not likely to work in your favor. Going from 400 to 700 in two months doesn't really mean anything, as it almost certainly won't be a real 300 point improvement (it just means that the test taker underperformed on his or her first attempt). Something like a 620 to a 700 is much better in that sense.

Hi AjiteshArun,

I understand your point and indeed agree with the same that it won't make sense to keep a score below 600. Thanks again for clearing my doubts regarding the same, and also about school selection and photo/palmvein. You summed it up quite well.
I will give my best on this attempt. However, if things go south, I will put my 200% in the next one as it is an important aspect also the single objective factor that I can control.

Thanks again.
