Hi Laukik,
That's a very good question! I think apart from your GMAT maybe R3 might have been a factor too. 660 is decent for Simon Rochester and for your profile. As for changing goals, you are correct in thinking that no one's goals change in 4 months. But this is a much deeper question and a shift can be justified if you have the conviction for it. My suggestion is to go back and think about why you chose Simon in the first place and take it from there. If you'd like any professional help, I'd be more than happy to assist you. Good Luck!

Best,

Hello EduSimplified,

Hello Admission experts,

I am reapplying to the full time MBA program at the Simon school of business for the fall 2019 intake in round 1. I had previously applied for the Fall 2018 intake in round 3 and was declined admission after being wait listed. I had talked with one of the admissions committee member while my application was in the wait-list status and he had mentioned my GMAT score of 630 was the one of the biggest factor for the wait list. He had also mentioned that other parts of the application were not the problem at the time.

I re-took my GMAT and was able to get a 660 this time around.
Now my biggest question is should I change my Goals and school fit essay for this round of applications as it has only been 4 months since I got my Ding. My goals and reasons to attend Simon have not changed. I am definitely going to write about the steps and progress (my promotion) that I have made for this round of applications in the optional essay.

Little background for context
Nationality: India
Gender: Male
Industry: Biotechnology and Pharmaceuticals (I work in core Research and development of a mid size diagnostics company in the US)
Years of experience: 4
Short and Long term goals: I want to stay in the Phama-Biotech industry but in the management side of things.

Thank you for all the help and advise,

Laukik

Hello lysardesai,

We quite agree with the above reply. The GMAT score, as well as your application in Round 3, would have had an impact on your application. The career goals don't necessarily need to be changed as they do sync up logically. However, you could definitely segregate the short-term and long-term goals in a more structured manner.

The following video may be useful in structuring your answer for Simon. Please do watch it :-)

All the best!

Hello Akanksha,

Thank you for your help in answering my question. The video link was very useful too.

Hi Laukik,

Do not change your goals merely to show something new in your profile. For a reapplicant, there could be two scenarios:

1. You introspected you profile since last year, had new experiences, which forced you to rethink your career goals and change them. So the new ones you mention in the reapp essay should show better alignment with what you have done so far. This strategy should work with applicants whose goals were fuzzy/misaligned in the previous year's application. In your case, a drastic change in career goals will be concerning because you have only had a few months since the past year's application.

2. Your experiences since the past year have strengthened your career goals. As I understand, this suits you better. I am going to recommend that if you are answering the reapplicant's essay, you still make this point there.

In either cases, its reasonable to change your long-term goals. Your passion for achieving these goals can remain the same as last year, but the path to reach these goals could be altered.

I'd also like to mention that many reapplicants copy-paste info from their last year's essays. Don't do that. Show the b-school that you have stronger reasons to attend (aided by your b-school research)

Hope that helps.

Hi,

I agree with what Namita said above.

Also, stating that you want to move to the management side of Pharma/Biotech is too generic. Take it to the next level.

And if you made a mistake in assessing your goals, and have realised that you could not show incremental value of an MBA in the previous year's application, take ownership of that failure, acknowledge it, and then give them the new story. Changing a past fact is inauthentic. But changing the FUTURE View of the world is not inauthentic. It can be called - GROWTH. Probably you grew tremendously in your thought process, and it is time to acknowledge it and take action.

The way you are saying it- it is sounding like- should I cling to the same story as there is an associated past attachment to it, and will they question my commitment if I tell them that my goals have changed? That is not the right way to think about it.

I am sure your goals will not change significantly. It is the maturity of the expression that will count.
