ramlala
I am basically from regional language academic background and not having grip over English. In practice test, I got score Q49 & V20. In verbal SC & RC score was poor. I started practice of SC questions (after revision of basics from veritas book) and got good accurancy at GMAT club upto 700 questions. But for >700 questions, accuracy is still <30%.
Also need help for RC improvement.
Hi ramlala,
A score of V20 indicates that there are certain conceptual gaps which you need to fill and that you are struggling with the application of concepts. I would suggest you to first understand what is actually tested on each module of Verbal and the right way to solve those question types. Foe example, SC questions don't test you grammatical knowledge but they test your ability to convey the right meaning without any ambiguity.
The right way to solve SC questions:
So, it's important that you approach SC questions from meaning stand-point. You might have often come across answer choices which are grammatically correct and which convey a logical meaning but are indeed incorrect. So, it's important that you understand the intended meaning of the original sentence, identify the errors if any and then eliminate answer choices which either are grammatically incorrect or do not convey the intended meaning.
The right way to solve RC questions:
- Read the passage
- Understand the purpose of the each sentence
- Draw inferences from each para
- Summarize the para once you finish reading it
- Derive the main point by summarizing the summaries of individual paras
- If you come across any details while reading the passage, skip them for the moment as you can always come back to that specific part if you need to solve detail based questions
- Once you finish reading the passage, read the question stem
- Go to the relevant area of the passage and make sure you draw the right inferences
- Eliminate answer choices carefully (either irrelevant, out of scope or opposite choices)
This is how you should read a passage and solve the questions. If you learnt the right methods to read the passage and to eliminate answer choices, then I would suggest you to practice a few passages without any time limit. Focus on solving the passages using the right methodology. Once you start getting a decent accuracy, then you can take timed quizzes.
I'm not sure how you prepared till now and which resource you used, but if the resource you are currently using doesn't help you with the methodology and strategies, then I would suggest you to switch to a standard resource which can help you with them. You can checkout the verbal course of
GMATWhiz for that matter. And I would suggest that we have a detailed discussion regarding your weak areas and the study strategy so that I can understand your concerns and guide you in a better way. You can use the below link to get in touch with me.
