Is this something to be worried about?
I recently started studying for the GMAT, as I plan to apply for MBA programs next Fall. However, it is a little concerning to think that MBAs are no longer 'worth it'? Is the ROI still there if you can get into a top 20 program? Do businesses still value an MBA?

Hi there!
This is a question that comes up every couple years, and when addressing it, you have to put things in perspective. MBAs absolutely make sense for certain careers – management consulting, banking, general management, brand management, corporate strategy, and the list goes on. Top MBA programs are feeders to a ton of top firms, and it will always be that way. In looking at placement %’s and starting salaries for the best MBA programs, the ROI is certainly justified.
The article is interesting…it discusses that McKinsey has found success in hiring PhD’s which is true, and it makes sense for them. But, on the flip side, McKinsey is also the single largest recruiter of MBA graduates. See an article from a Poets and Quants article that shows a bit of a different perspective.

Thanks. I have no desire to get a PhD, so if consulting firms still valued MBAs along with PhDs then the MBA would definitely be worth it.
I guess the lingering thought is, "Could I do this without an MBA?" Some people may think that they can work their way up to a leadership role with work experience in the same time it takes to get an MBA.
