Having a strong profile is not the same as having a strong MBA story.
This is something we have noticed with HEC Paris applicants.
You may have good academics, solid work experience, international exposure and achievements that make you a competitive candidate.
But when you put the application together, there can still be a missing connection:
Why MBA? Why HEC? And why now? It’s relatively easy to say:
- HEC has a strong consulting ecosystem.
- Paris is a global luxury hub.
- The school has strong entrepreneurship resources.
- There are opportunities in finance, tech and other industries.
The harder question is:
Why do these things matter for your career? For example, if you want to move into consulting, your application should ideally explain more than why HEC is a good place to study consulting.
It should help the reader understand how your experiences have led you there, why an MBA is the right bridge, and why HEC makes sense for that particular transition.
Ask three questions:
1. Why is an MBA necessary at this point in my career?
2. Why does HEC make sense for the specific next step I want to take?
3. What will I contribute to the HEC classroom beyond my job title and achievements?
You don't need to have your entire career figured out. But your story should make sense.
We’re discussing exactly these kinds of questions in our upcoming live session on 17 September at 8:30 PM IST | 8:00 AM PDT, covering HEC applications, career stories and some of the questions applicants are currently thinking about.
