Kerra
Hello
I desperately need some advice related to the gmat study plan. A bit about myself I started my prep in Feb but it was with my college studies. I completed CR part of my eGMAT course (but I was not good at it and I was making a lot of mistakes) but I had my exams so I left it there. I didn't pick anything for almost a month and then I started by RC and I thought I would redo CR, but I again got my exams (my uni is academically rigorous and we have exams every 1.2 months). So, I thought I'd prepare in my breaks.
Now I'm on a 2-month break from 21st April to 23 June and I'm planning to prepare and give gmat around 21st June. I took an official GMAT mock in January, and I scored 535 and 46%ile in quants, 42%ile in verbal, and 51%ile in DI. My target is to get 99%ile because I want to apply to colleges like LBS, HEC, ESSEC etc and I want to compensate for my grades.
Now please give a reality check and tell me how unrealistic this whole plan is. Should I give Gmat later? or it is possible to get the score? should I focus on completing one topic at a time ( as told by eGMAT instructor) or I should do topics simultaneously?
Hi! First of all, it's normal with college students (and even working professionals) that GMAT/GRE prep is put on a hold due to various circumstances. While you prepared a bit earlier, the truth is you will have to start all over again (if you recollect things from your previous preparations, then it's a bonus for you). Coming to the plan, it's very much realistic but you will have to get going immediately. You will have to build a solid study plan. Here are a few tips:
1) Build a plan for 2 months
Sample - Month 1: Quickly build your concepts but don't study for long hours (rather space them out, don't forget to take breaks in between). Start taking one mock test every week and analyze it well.
Month 2: Increase the frequency of mock tests to 2 tests every week and analyze them well.
You may check out the blog
"Boost Your GMAT/GRE Scores" to get a detailed plan. It's for 3 months, but you can tweak it to 2 months.
2) Focus on all the sections at once. Since you have to pretty much work on all the sections, I would recommend you to allocate hours within a day to each subject. For example Verbal: morning 2 hours, Quant : afternoon 2 hours, and DI: evening 2 hours.
3) Within Verbal, Quant, and DI - Focus on completing one topic at a time.
4) Mark an ideal date on your calendar for taking your next GMAT attempt (and work backwards).
5) Assess your preparation around June 1st week using your mock test scores and then decide if you can take the GMAT official test before 21st June.
6) Generally, the first couple of weeks are light in unis - if that's the case in your uni too, you can use that time for final preparation and take the GMAT official test.
7) Since you are on a real time-crunch and in case you get stuck on any specific topics - then get 1x1 or group coaching sessions only for that topic (we do provide that)
I think it will all fall in place - you just need to focus on action and build your GMAT strategy and score day by day (there are no shortcuts here
