Any idea why your official scores kept coming down across successive tests?

Dear Marty Murray,

Appreciate your time and writing down your suggestions. I read the articles and can relate to what the essence is. Yeah, I figured earlier that I can push my quant to 50 (less than 5 mistakes) by avoiding some silly calculation errors. But, I kept making more than 3-4 of such errors, mainly because I used to exhaust my time and energy in solving a tougher question (or using a longer approach). It appeared to be a pattern and I made peace with it. The mistakes appeared easy to solve afterwards.

Thanks,
Nag.

I would like to blame it on cramming my practice towards the end with it experiencing kind of burn out. I wasn’t at the top of my game going into the test. I was barely able to finish my last official practice which ended up with Q46. That’s one lesson I learnt.

Thanks,
Nag.

By strengthening a few areas of quant, you'll get through some questions faster and give yourself more time to answer the other questions.

For example, at one point, I would take a long time to answer overlapping sets questions, and my entire quant section suffered because of overlapping sets. Once I got better at answering that one type of question, I did better on all of the quant section because I had more time to answer the other questions.

Also, here's the thing. While going from Q49 to Q51 may not seem to be much of a move, four more correct answers in quant might move your total score up 30 points. So, if you can achieve that change with a little work in quant, that work would be a worthwhile investment.

On another note, you may be able to increase your accuracy in quant by applying some of the ideas in this post. Improving Your Accuracy on the GMAT

All that said, it's true that, by adjusting the way you have been preparing for verbal, you could increase your verbal score substantially without too much trouble. So, I guess you have to decide what the shortest path to your goal is.

b. I need to regain my confidence, especially with verbal, given my test experience. I am worried that there were fundamental issues that surfaced on the test day. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Working on your solving approach may be helpful if your fundamentals are fairly strong.

Hi Nagendar21,

First off, a 640/Q49 is a solid Score, so it could be enough to get you into your first-choice School. As such, a retest might not be necessary. If you already have a list of Schools that interest you, then you would likely find it beneficial to speak with an Admissions Expert about your overall profile and plans. Those Experts should be able to answer your Admissions questions and help define the specific areas of your profile that could use some improvement. There's a Forum full of those Experts here:

https://gmatclub.com/forum/ask-admissio ... tants-124/

Before I can offer you the specific advice that you’re looking for, it would help if you could provide a bit more information on how you've been studying and your goals:

Studies:
1) Since July, how many hours do you typically study each week?
2) You noted that you had taken the Manhattan CATs, but you did not include that information among your CAT/mock Scores. On what dates (or approximate dates) did you take EACH of your CATs/mocks and how did you score on EACH (including the Quant and Verbal Scaled Scores for EACH)?

Goals:
3) What is your overall goal score?
4) When are you planning to apply to Business School and what Schools are you planning to apply to?

While the ESR doesn’t provide a lot of information, there are usually a few data points that we can use to define what went wrong on Test Day (and what you should work on to score higher). If you purchase the ESR, then I'll be happy to analyze it for you. Before you can include attachments with your posts/PMs, you need to have at least 5 posts in the forums (right now, you have 3 posts). If you would rather not go through those extra steps at this point, then you can feel free to email me directly (at [email protected])

Nagendar21
Hello All,

I've taken my GMAT on 20th October and scored 640 (Q49,V27). Though this is my first attempt, the score is not a reflection of lack of intent or effort. I started my preparation in April 2021, but more seriously beginning July. Leading up to the exam, I gave all 4 (paid) official tests and scores are listed below,

1. Official practice 1- 700 (Q49,V37)
2. OP 2- 730 (Q49, V40)
3. OP 3 - 660 (Q49, V30)
4. OP 4 - 640 (Q46, V33)- gave the day before actual test

I gave all of these tests within last 10 days leading to my test day. Needless to say, the dwindling scores lowered my confidence going into the test.
I was also giving GMAT club quant tests parallely.

Test Experience:

I have to admit that the test Center environment got the better of me. I started off with verbal, similar to my practice strategy, followed by quant,Ir and AWA.
The verbal appeared extremely tough, tougher than any test material I used. I couldn't figure out the best approach for SC, the CR questions were more twisted than anything I came across, the RC looked really weird. Coming into quant section, the nerves eased off and I was able to find my groove.

How I prepared:

Verbal:

I had a friend of mine explain the basics of verbal (non-native speaker here) and then started off solving OG’21 and Verbal’21 guides. One’s the guides were completed,I used MGMAT CAT’s to test my understanding.Started off with a 28 score and steadily improved to 34 by the end of all 6 CAT’s. CR has been my forte with RC being a weak area. I was okay with SC.

Quant:

Started off with Official guide and later purchased GMAT club tests. The tests were tough but played a pivotal role in getting me to Q49 levels. Being an engineer, the Quant section was never much of a problem.

Summary of material used:

1. Official verbal and quant guides
2. Manhattan CAT’s
3. GMAT Club tests
4. All official tests

Current situation:

I am considering retaking GMAT for the reasons below,(Planning for first week of Nov)
a. My target schools average GMAT scores is in range of 680 to 700.
b. I still believe I can do better than 640 given my experience with the official practice exams.

Help required with:

a. Test material, Since I already exhausted most of the resources.
b. I need to regain my confidence, especially with verbal, given my test experience. I am worried that there were fundamental issues that surfaced on the test day. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Nag

Hi Nagendar21,

Have you already booked your slot for the first week of Nov or considered to postpone it by any chance?

Hi Nagendar21

Your big problem is that you still can't answer the WHY? question. The ESR will tell you WHAT you had problems with (like question types, quant or verbal topics, timing). But the problem is none of that is EFFICIENTLY ACTIONABLE. Just vague guidance to do more problems in topic areas is going to put you in the 20/80 trap (20% effective / 80 % ineffective study hours). That means you spend 10 hours and only 2 hours have effective impact on your score.

You need to get a specific detailed answer to the WHY question. Why did you have trouble with specific Verbal questions or quant topics?
