One thing that can help is to try to grasp the underlying concepts. Consider playing around with smaller questions to really get a feel for how and why you divide and multiply to get the answer you need. This same type of learning can be applied to different sub-topics, too, such as exponents. Instead of memorizing the rules regarding the formulas, you can play around with small numbers and see how things change and interact.
