One question I’ve heard quite a few Booth applicants ask lately:
“How specific do my post-MBA goals actually need to be?”
It’s tempting to think you need to have everything figured out - exact role, industry, company, even the five-year plan.
I’m not sure that’s the right way to approach it.
What matters more is whether your career story makes sense.
Why does your experience so far point you toward your next step?
What do you hope to gain from an MBA?
And why is Booth a logical fit for that journey?
For example, saying “I want to move into consulting” doesn’t tell us much on its own. The more interesting question is why consulting makes sense for you, what you’ve learned from your previous experiences, and what you want to do with those skills afterward.
The same applies if you’re considering a career switch. You don’t necessarily need a perfectly linear background. But you do need to explain the connection between where you’ve been and where you’re trying to go.
For those working on their Booth applications now, how specific are you making your career goals? Are you finding it easier to explain the destination, or the reasoning behind it?
Would be interesting to hear how others are approaching this.

This was really helpful, especially for someone considering a career switch. I have one question, is it okay to have 2 to 3 potential roles in mind, or is it better to present one primary goal and explain the reasoning behind it?
