as a current wake forest student who just finished the winter internship in march, I say it was absolutely essential to getting a full time offer (big4). As Dawgie said you may have a better chance of getting an advisory position at Texas but there were several people who interned in the advisory service lines of big4 firms this past winter, so it's not impossible. Most people interview for audit or tax on campus.

Why Advisory over Tax, is the pay difference that significant, or is strictly exit options/MBA prospects?

I would say advisory and tax are really different. Obviously there's a certain amount of consulting in tax, but all you really deal with is...well, tax. Advisory is more consulting/risk management type stuff, I think. So they're really quite different. I also imagine advisory would you give you different exit opps or a better mba application than maybe tax.

Turns out you can get a full-time offer without an internship; it might just be a little tougher...
