As for the solution:

Well although this kind of problem is advertised as difficult it is straightforward to solve.

We have two numbers and the result of the sum of their multiples.
So how can we obtain $$46$$? We need to focus on the unit's digit $$6$$, of course the only one between $$5$$ and $$7$$ that can give us $$6$$ is $$7$$,
$$7*8=56$$, but it is too big, so we need something ending in $$1$$, so that $$1+5 -> 6$$, and so we find $$7*3 = 21$$
Than we add $$5$$ and obtain $$26$$, to get to $$46$$ (or $$4,6$$) we still need $$4$$ times $$5$$ or $$20$$, therefore, $$7*3 + 5*(1+4) = 46$$
$$(5,3)$$

Straightaway use answer options ( Ignoring the decimal point ) -

(A)  1,6

1*5 + 6*7 => 47 ( Incorrect )

(B)  2,7

2*5 + 7*7 => 59 ( Incorrect )

(C)  3,5

3*5 + 5*7 => 50 ( Incorrect )

(D)  4,3

4*5 + 3*7 => 41 ( Incorrect )

(E)  5,3

5*5 + 3*7 => 46 ( Correct )

How many coins of 0.5 dollars each and 0.7 dollars each together make exactly 4.6 dollars?
(A) 1, 6
(B) 2, 7
(C) 3, 5
(D) 4, 3
(E) 5, 3

x is the number of coins of 0.5 dollars
y is the number of coins of 0.7 dollars

then 0.5x+0.7y=4.6 or 5x+7y=46 and x,y are positive integers.

Now we could solve this question using Numerical methods
