Hi paul77,

I do think studying for quant makes the most sense, and here is some advice on how to move forward with your quant prep.

I recommend adopting a prep strategy consisting of topical learning and practice. In other words, focus on just one topic at a time and practice that topic until you achieve mastery.

For instance, let's consider your study of Number Properties. First, immerse yourself in all aspects of this topic, and then focus solely on Number Property questions. After each problem set, take the time to delve into your incorrect answers. This self-reflection is a powerful tool that allows you to understand your learning process and make significant improvements. For instance, if you made a mistake in a remainder question, ask yourself why. Was it a careless error? Did you not apply the remainder formula correctly? Was there a concept in the question that you didn't grasp?

By meticulously analyzing your mistakes, you will efficiently address your weaknesses and, consequently, enhance your GMAT quant skills. This process has been unequivocally proven to be effective. Number Properties is just one example; follow this process for all Quant topics.

Here is a great article you can check out for some more advice:

Wow. Fantastic job on the DI - that is usually the hardest section for people. There is really no good way to study for it, so this answers part of your question.

In terms of what to study, Yes, you should do Quant and then as needed Verbal. You can get the MGMAT books or a quick course depending on what you would prefer. Unless you run into major trouble, I suspect it should take about 6 weeks total. maybe 8 if you have to stretch it out. It really depends on how Rusty you are with Quant.

Hello,

I wanted to do the GMAT by December for my masters degree applications (in Europe). I at least want to score a 650, more is obviously also welcome. One obstacle is, that I have to do the preparations next to a 40 hour/week internship.

I have done the 2 practice GMAT tests on mba . com, without any type of studying and my scores were very unbalanced to say the least. My 2 scores were 615 and 625 respectively. My percentiles in data insights were 90 and 98, in verbal I was in the 86th and 96th percentile and in quantitative reasoning in the 52nd and 29th percentile.

In the data insight section my errors were only math related, to be more exact in data sufficiency and graphs and tables. However 75% of them were due to not paying enough attention and flying over the questions (I was finished way earlier in both cases).
For verbal my weakness seems to be reading comprehensions (again 75% of the mistakes), more precise the "identify stated / inferred questions". I have found some prep videos on gmatclubnow for reading comprehensions and will use them.

My scores in the quantitative section were way worse then in both other areas. In both cases quant was my last section, but I doubt that this had much influence. I was decent at "counting / sets / series / prob / stats", but not good, and just bad at all other questions, indicated by the overall percentiles. On the bride side, none of the concepts were complex to me and I obviously did way more complex math in university. I was just missing the approaches to tackle them.

Now to my question: Would you, in my case, just study for the quant section, apart form the reading comprehension? If so, have you got any recommendations for me to start?

Hi paul774,

That's an amazing start, and yes, it's a good idea to focus on quant. However, I recommend that you not completely ignore verbal and DI, just in case there are weaknesses in your prep that the first two tests did not expose.

All the best.
