Hy guys.

I am planning to apply to an MBA in US: UVA, EMORY, RICE, TEPPER, OLIN. I took GMAT and scored well (640) but I am working to retake GMAT in one or two months so I can hopefully improve my score. I would like to know if should I talk with the admission comission guys right now or wait until retake the GMAT? If I approach now what kind of things could ask? I dont want to be rude, and ruin my chances or image with these guys. Can I talk about my profile with the adcom guys?

Thanks.

I do not recommend to talk with adcom about your profile at all. When you approach adcom, you may ask about unclear info about the program such as cut off score in GMAT or TOEFL, or something in the essay, electives...etc. Sometimes schools offer Skype meeting to get close to you, do not try say 'can you evaluate my profile'. Be smart when introducing yourself and be prepared. Do not ask questions that you could obtain easily from website.

Good luck

First of all, most of the ADCOM "guys" are "girls" for what that is worth! I think this early in the game there is not too much to be gained from discussing your GMAT score with adcom. I would spend that time just prepping for the GMAT itself! I think you should visit schools and learn more about the program- but I would focus on that and not feel the need to explain your GMAT. It is what it is... until you can make it better- if you can. But they will see the score and there's not a whole lot you can do to fix it. If you can wow folks with your career goals, knowledge of the program and how you can make a contribution, that can really help. If you find that you cannot move the GMAT further, I think it could be helpful to give the GRE a try! Best wishes!

Discussions about profile evaluation and GMAT are cheesy for adcoms and I have heard them say so in several interviews, so steer clear off that direction. A better approach is to tell them about yourself - your work experiences, why you want to do an MBA and what you hope to gain out of it. In addition, you could ask them which of their program's resources will enable you to achieve your goals.
Having a 1-2 minute elevator pitch ready will be super helpful in introducing yourself briefly and succinctly, without missing out on any key elements of your candidacy.

A question like " I have 640 GMAT, should I retake?" will probably draw a standard response " to use your judgment" and its not going to make you any more memorable to the adcoms, than the guy who asked the question before you.

With this approach, the timing of your adcom interaction is not going to matter. Starting tracking the info sessions that happen in and around your city and register for them with aplomb.
