Hi JohnM,

First off, a 730/Q50 is an outstanding score (it's well above the 90th percentile overall), so you can apply to any Business Schools that interest you. As such, a retest is almost certainly not necessary. It's important to remember that the score that you 'want' and the score that you 'need' are rarely the same thing. Depending on the Schools that you plan to apply to, you would likely find it beneficial to speak with an Admissions Expert about your overall profile. There's a Forum full of them here:

Hi JohnM,

Since you are shooting for a 760, I agree that you need to raise your verbal score and also agree that focusing on critical reasoning and sentence correction is a great way to raise that score. With that said, you may consider following my original advice of focused verbal practice to help find and fix your remaining verbal weaknesses.

Also, since you were able to achieve a quant score of 50, you may consider continuing to practice quant so that you can either maintain your quant score or even raise that score to a 51.

If you have any further questions, feel free to reach out to me directly.

Good luck!!

Over the course of three months of study, I went from a 660 (Q47 V35) to a 730 (Q50 V40).

I have my GMAT in a month and a half now.

My quant score improved massively after going through the gmatclub maths book and completing 4 gmatclub quant tests. I just need to bump my verbal score by 4 points.

Any advice on how to do that?

Suggestions on what NOT to do are also welcome!

Hi JohnM,

You have a great score and might not need to retake it.
But after going through the reasons stated by you, especially the last one :) I would say that go ahead.

Looking at your sub sectional percentiles, I would recommend you to dig deep in each of the question types:
SC: The questions test various concepts such as S-V agreement, modifiers, parallelism etc. Find out what troubles you.
CR: There might be certain types of questions that are troubling you. May be Assumption, may be conclusion, inference etc.
You need to find that out and then practice them
RC: This again can be drilled down into different types of questions and also different topics. See what questions and topics trouble you the most and then practice accordingly. Making a passage map can help tremendously as this helps you increase your comprehension of the passage.

As an addition, start preparing an error log and keep a note of all the mistakes you made and the lessons you learnt from the problems. This will ensure you do not make the same mistake again.

Make sure you complete all of the OG and the Verbal review and if required, you can buy the Question pack1 from mba.com.

Yes, I am focusing hard for that Q51!

Hey Janielle!

Thanks for the insightful advice! I do keep an error log and go through it frequently.
I'll use all that you told me here.

Hey Rich!

Thanks for the compliment!
I completely agree with you. The score that I 'want' and the score that I 'need' are not always the same thing.
Overall profile is indeed what's more valuable than any one element.
Having said that, it's just a personal goal of mine to score in the top 1%.
Will do what you said here!

Hey!

So what was your final score? Did you end up with a V44?
