I've been consistently advised to research my target schools. To this end, I've subscribed to their email newsletters and frequently (like nonstop, to be honest, lol) receive notifications about various events. However, I've hesitated to participate in any of these events due to uncertainty about what to expect, and I'm concerned about making a negative impression before even applying. Do I need to look nice? Do we need cameras on or off? Do I need questions prepared, etc?
Could anyone provide insights into what these events are like? What should I anticipate, and do you have any advice on how to effectively research and understand a school's environment and offerings (clubs, etc)? Most advice seems to suggest 'doing research' without further elaboration.
Thanks in advance for your help!
TheComeBackKid - good question. Broadly, here are some ways to research a program:
1. For starters, the school's website, brochure and employment reports provide useful information and statistics. Most schools also have a blog written by students/ alum/ Adcom, and forums like GMATClub have insights specific to B-schools.
2. Speaking with Alum or students is a great way to gather first-hand insights. Ask them questions about their experience, their observations of candidates similar to your background, their advise for you, school-specific resources, etc. LinkedIn outreaches can help here.
3. Attending info-sessions (to your question) hosted by AdCom are a great way to indicate your interest, some schools also track this. I would suggest doing the first two steps to gather the basic info, before you attend these sessions so you could ask insightful questions from your notes.
Hope this helps a bit.
