Hello everyone,
I am just beginning my journey to study for the GMAT and I have looked into various videos and forums before taking the initial steps. I have purchased the Official Guide to the GMAT 2021 and 2022. I plan to take a diagnostic test this weekend as everyone recommends, however I am unsure of how to proceed afterwards. Should I only focus on the questions I get wrong? The way the books seem to be formatted is that there is a large section of comprehensive review followed by questions. Should I go through the review and take notes on each part and then answer the questions? Or should I answer questions first and then revert back to the material? Is it too tedious to take notes on each part of the review? I know this may sound like a very simple question, I am just having trouble in these beginning stages. I am unsure of how to go about studying through the book. I hope to score at least a 700 and would like to study in the most effective way possible. If you have any suggestions please let me know! Thank you!

Hi. Welcome to GMAT Club. I’m probably going to mess with your world a bit so I’m sorry about that. 😬😎
1. Official guide 2022 is the same as 2021. There’s no difference between them. You bought two copies of the same book. Sorry! 😬
2. Official guide is really just a question collection. The review inside of it is worthless. You are welcome to check for yourself. It’s deceiving in the sense that it implies like you should have all the materials you need in reality it is very incomplete. It’s lacking any strategies and the review is shallow.
3. Unless you are within 30 or 50 points of your target score, you will need other resources to get better and to score better. You can look at my study plan post in my signature but ultimately you need either a set of books or some kind of an expensive course to give you the fundamentals you need and also the strategies you need.
The official guide is just a collection of questions. It’s very valuable but not as a teaching book but rather as a practice book.

The OG books are great sources for practice questions, but they're not designed to teach you Tactics, patterns or the little 'secrets' behind the GMAT - for those, you'll need Course-oriented materials. To that end, you might want to work on the OG a little later on in your studies. The GMAT2022 book is remarkably similar to the GMAT2021 book (all of the practice questions in the 2022 are also in the 2021; the 2022 includes some additional content that you might find useful - depending on how you 'learn best').
Since it sounds like you're just beginning your studies, then it would be a good idea to take a FULL-LENGTH practice CAT Test; you can access 2 for free at www.mba.com (and they come with some additional practice materials). If you want to do a little studying first, so that you can familiarize yourself with the basic content and question types, then that's okay - but you shouldn't wait too long to take that initial CAT. That score will give us a good sense of your natural strengths and weaknesses and will help provide a basis for comparison as you continue to study. A FULL CAT takes about 3.5 hours to complete, so make sure that you've set aside enough time to take it in one sitting. Once you have that Score, you should report back here (or you can feel free to PM me directly) and we can discuss the results and how you might best proceed with your studies.

1) Going forward, how many hours do you think you can consistently study each week?
2) When are you planning to apply to Business School and what Schools are you planning to apply to?
