That's pretty sad. She's been totally warped by the expectations placed on her.

Some parents are just nuts. they don't know what is really important in life. Both the kid and her parents need to seek some professional (mental) help immediately!.

It's not free. It may cost her $42k.

I doubt it, the university will probably just try to make this go away quietly; this PR isn't good for either party.

sucks for her roomate - living with a lying stranger, having her email hacked, and having her parents read this in the newspaper. "Zhou never noticed, as she spent nearly all her nights in her boyfriend’s room."

I'm totally fascinated by people like this. Kind of like that Frank Abegnale (the Catch Me If You Can guy), people that are mostly benign, that seem to get a kick out of living lies. There was some special on MSNBC about some kid who did the same thing at Yale back in the 70's, just showed up and somehow wormed his way into school.

Definitely an odd story, but it's actually pretty impressive that she got away with it for so long. I'd be interested in hearing about why she felt compelled to do this?

I wonder if she only applied to Stanford? She must've been able to get into some other good schools given her HS caliber.

She didn't dupe Stanford at all. She duped the housing authorities.

Anyone can go on campus and take a class. It takes skill to live at somebody's place when you're not supposed to be living there.

so an update with this currently raging on in the Stanford email lists... Stanford made a shirt that they're selling that says:

"It's either a FULL RIDE at Cal, or SNEAKING into Stanford" - Azia Kim

There's been a firestorm of debate on how the shirt is offensive and insulting to the Asian American community and students who are pressuring the administration to pull the shirts from the Student Store (which Stanford just did this Monday). I personally don't see that big of a deal about it, and thought it was kind of funny, but obviously quite a few vocal students thought differently.

Just thought I update this thread, now that I finally connected what that shirt is about with this article!

pretty sad. that girls life has been set back 5 years at least. im asian-american myself and im glad i didnt feel that kind of pressure to go to a top tier school. my sister actually went to stanford, but i didnt get in anywhere close to that level and i took the full ride to the state school.
