Hello Everyone,

I am writing this post to ask about the best GMAT Course that might help me in improving my GMAT score (especially Verbal).

The scores of my Mock CATs and the Actual Test I took are attached with this post.

Looking forward for your replies.

Thanks in advance.

Hey maysara,

I believe egmat can help a lot...
I subscribed to their course last year and I can say it helped me ..

You can attend their free webinars that they have every week one each for SC, RC and CR and then decide for yourself ..
But based on my experience, I can readily vouch for egmat and its team ..

PM me if you need any other details ...

Hit Kudos if this helps !!! ;)

Hey Mihir,

Thank you for your reply. I will give it a shot and see how it goes.

Thanks again.

Hi maysara,

It looks like most of your practice CAT scores (and Official Score) fell into the score range that we discussed back in December. The drop from 690 to 560 is something that needs to be discussed though. When these types of score drops occur, the two likely "causes" involve either something that was unrealistic during practice or something that was surprising (or not accounted for) on Test Day. If you can answer a few questions, then we should be able to figure this out:

When you took your CATs:
1) Did you take the ENTIRE CAT each time (including the Essay and IR sections)?
2) Did you take them at home?
3) Did you take them at the same time of day as when you took your Official GMAT?
4) Did you ever do ANYTHING during your CATs that you couldn't do on Test Day (pause the CAT, skip sections, take longer breaks, etc.)?
5) Did you ever take a CAT more than once? Had you seen any of the questions BEFORE?

GMAT assassins aren't born, they're made,
Rich

Hey Rich,

1) Yes, it the last three CATs I took the full test.
2) Some at home, and some are not.
3) Yes, I took them all in the morning. (1-2 hours difference)
4) I did not skip sections in my last three CATs. The breaks were almost the same.
5) No. Maximum 2 or 3 questions total.

Regards,

Hi Sajjad,

Thank you for your reply. I agree, I believe I can do better in Quant, I just need some more practice and concentration in the test day.

For verbal, I was thinking about purchasing eGMAT course but I was making a comparison between eGMAT and EMPOWER. What do you think?

That's a major drop, and for what it's worth, I think you will be able to do much better if you just take the exam again. Improve your verbal, but I don't think you'll be improving it from 21.

Your Verbal score on the actual test is obviously an outlier, though I have noticed that the Verbal section got somewhat harder the last time I took the test: I dropped from my usual 46-48 (99%) down to a 40 (91%).

Did you fail to answer all the questions on your actual GMAT? It could have been a pacing issue. Remember not to go too slowly at the beginning of Verbal, because the Verbal scoring algorithm doesn't make "snap judgements" about your ability level as severely as does the Quant algorithm. If you don't quickly recognize the definite answer to a question (within 1.5 minutes on average, or 2 minutes at most), then don't drive yourself crazy--take a guess and move on. You have 41 questions to answer in 75 minutes, so there is no time to waste.

I've also heard great things about e-GMAT for ESL test-takers, and have tutored some private students who worked with e-GMAT concurrently, many of whom went on to earn excellent Verbal scores.

Hi maysara,

Test Day is a rather specific 'event' - the details are specific and they matter, so you have to train as best as you can for all of them. The more realistic you can make your CATs, the more likely the score results are to be accurate. The more you deviate, the more "inflated" your practice scores can become - and that's what happened here. By taking your CATs in an inconsistent manner (re: taking the CATs at home, taking them at different times of day, etc.), and seeing 'repeat' questions, you weren't properly training for the FULL GMAT 'experience.' In addition, the process of taking (and reviewing) a CAT requires a significant amount of energy and effort - and takes time to 'recover' from. This is one of the reasons why you typically shouldn't take more than 1 CAT per week. By taking 3 CATs in the week before your Official GMAT, there's a reasonable chance that you experienced some 'burn out' on Test Day (this helps to explain your performance in the Verbal section - which is when most Test Takers are at their most fatigued).

Thankfully, this is a relatively easy set of problems to fix. If we assume that your ability level is in the low-600s, then you will likely still need at least another 1-2 months of consistent, guided study to score in the high-600s or 700s. You might also need to invest in some new practice materials (especially practice CATs that don't have questions that you've seen before).

Rich
