My name is Anizoba Obinna Emmanuel and I reside in Nigeria. I graduated two years ago with a degree in Economics (was in the top 6% in a class of 200 students despite the fact that I actually buckled up and got serious with studies only in my Junior and Senior year). But due to the job situation over here in Nigeria (the US McKinsey consultancy estimates that the unemployment rate in Nigeria is up to 50% for youths), I was lucky enough to get an online tutoring job with the US company Chegg. Even for the ones who do have a job over here, it still doesn’t actually pay much to enable one save up, go and get a good master abroad (for you to do that, you should be lucky enough to have a very good job that pays well or have rich parents. I actually have a rich dad but he is practically of no good to me).
The Chegg tutoring job is really okay by Nigerian standards and I plan on going for a master’s programme in two years time max. I don’t think most business school will see this my online tutoring as a work experience, so I want to go for a master programme that doesn’t put much emphasis on work experience. I have actually looked around and gotten in contact with some schools in Europe and found out three programmes that I think I have a shot at getting in (ESADE Barcelona, HEC Paris and IE Spain). But they do require the GMAT as one of their criterion to get admitted and I just started looking at the GMAT questions a few days ago and to be frank, I do not like what I am seeing. Just took a trial test yesterday and the scores were nothing to write home about for real. Kind of bombed the verbal questions real bad for sure. Was getting 3/10,2/10 etc. on the mini tests. I will think that I got the questions correct only to submit the answers and then see that my thinking was way off from the explanations given. I have never been good with English/Grammar all my life though (kind of the maths and calculations guy) but the scores are really freaking me out.
So what I am asking are these?? Are my first trial results out of the normal? The verbal path is really freaking me out for real. I think the quantitative part is manageable and think I can improve with more questions but the verbal kind of make me feel like am dumb. Will read a sentence and think that nothing is wrong with it only for the actual answer to be shown and I have bombed it. I am also tight on finances and thus am not chanced to buy all these prep programmes that I see online (
Manhattan Prep, Veritas, Economist GMAT etc.). I want to set aside at most $1000 to prepare for the GMAT. I am not sure that I can afford more than that (still trying to save up for my tuition fees with my meagre salary lol). So how can one prepare well for the GMAT exam with a budget of $1000?? Plus I am targeting a score of at least 700 as it will make getting a scholarship for me much more easier (the schools said that your GMAT score is one of the factors that they look at when awarding scholarships) which I really do need to help with the cost.
And finally, do any of you guys do have some tips on acing the GMAT exam?? I am not dumb and I refuse to allow the GMAT exam make me feel like I am dumb. (I am exceedingly good with academics when I am at my best though)
