E-mail from Division Head to Accounting Manager and IT Director

I’ve just received a notification that the housing agency has not received our 2013 summaries. Failure to submit these documents threatens our reimbursement for client services, and that could result in a $250,000 hole in our budget. We can’t afford to lose that kind of money on a clerical error, especially on a task as routine as this one. We provide those summaries every quarter. It’s the same form, same data sources, and same date of submission. How can we allow ourselves to be two quarters behind?

1. Consider each of the following statements. Does the information in the three sources support the inference as stated?

Failure to file documents on time results in a loss of funding.
The e-mail #1 categorically mentions this aspect. It says that non filing could result in damage up to 2,50,000$. So supported

The accounting manager is confident that all forms would be filed on time if IT automated the process.
The accounting manager doesn’t speak on automation part. It is the IT director who mentions it. So, not supported.

Because the forms under discussion must be filed every quarter, automating the process is desirable.
The IT director’s mail, email #3, mentions this very clearly. Hence, supported.


2. Consider each of the following statements. Does the information in the three sources support the inference as stated?

Although the IT staff can automate the process of filing the forms, the agency that receives them will not accept computer-generated submissions.
It is not mentioned anywhere and is not supported.

The accounting manager can prove that the forms were submitted on time.
The email#2 does mention that the firm has all data including the acknowledgments and hence can prove that the data was sent in time.

Can we assume filing of documents and submission of documents the same in Ques - 1 option - "Failure to file documents on time results in a loss of funding" ?

In EMail #1, it is mentioned submission of docs. , while in EMail#2 Acc. Manager had submitted and filed the documents for record.

In literal sense, without using external knowledge, the answer would be a "NO" for this option.

Pls let me know your view on this. Thank u

It could have been better, had the same words been used throughout.

But in the question, the two should not be meaning too different. A definition in terms of law
‘File or submit means the act of delivering a document or instrument to a recording office for recording into the public records.’

Casually, we may use filing as putting into a system online. Filing ITR etc
Submit may include sending hard copy. Submitted documents at an office.
But should be ok both ways.

Statement 1: No information is provided in these documents about the requirements set by the receiving agency or about what the agency will or will not accept.

Answer: No

Statement 2: Various records exist, according to the accounting manager, to show when the documents were faxed and when printed copies were sent. There is also an acknowledgment from the agency that the documents were received.

Answer: Yes

­How can we say ''YES'' to statement-3? This is a very general statement. Because the forms under discussion must be filed every quarter, automating the process is desirable.
IT director explains why Automated service is desirable, but, maybe, he is not letting the other guy about the caveats of the Automated process, right? In light of those caveats, maybe, automated service is ''not desirable'' at all!

Sajjad1994 my issue here is when facing questions like #1, which says "Does the information in the three sources support the inference as stated?" - shouldn't we flag them all as "No" since the questions they're asking are not mentioned in ALL three emails? The way I read that is if whatever they're asking about is not explicitly mentioned in all three tabs then it's not supported by the three sources...am I wrong to read it like that?
