Long story short: I am a 28 years old Italian, with no experience in finance and with a master's degree in History (GPA 4); my GMAT is 700. I reached out IE Business School asking information on their MS Finance; to my surprise the director of admission wrote me that they have gone through "my profile and think that it suits our program very well".

I'd like to ask you some advice. Can anyone of you tell me how is the admission process? Is the ONLINE ASSESSMENT particularly tough?

I think IE is one of the most "commercial" schools in Europe. You have also to consider that the program fee is almost 2x the one of the other top business schools.

IMO with your profile and the lack of internships/work experience in finance it could be tough to land your first job experience when you finish the Master, since their program doesn't provide any mandatory internship. By the way IE remains one of the top business schools in Europe and if you network well you may have good success in finance.

Thank you for your reply. I am also quite concern about my profile, and you are right about the cost (IE costs 37000 while ESADE 31000, if I recall correctly HEC and Imperial are around 30000 as well, Bocconi is 32000 for two years). Tough choise for sure. Probably a more generalist master suits better my situation, a MiM maybe and in the meantime I can try CFA level 1 since I am interest in finance; an other issue is that I reckon that my not brilliant job history makes very difficult to get admitted to a top MBA.

Hi, IE is one of the top Business Schools in Europe and expensive also. Most of Europe's B-schools will not provide internships from the schools. If you focus on the network from the course beginning itself, you would get good placement offers after the course. All the best.

Hey TheCrownPrince,

IE business school falls under the category of renowned business schools and if you are getting a positive response from their director, I must say that just go for it without any second thoughts. The probable reasons why they considered you a good fit for the program might be the fact that you have an excellent GPA and a competitive GMAT score. Another factor which made things work in your favor might be the unique academic background which you have. Business schools are constantly looking for people with diverse backgrounds so that they can contribute towards the cultural exchange on campus.

Ms in Finance degree or MIM usually accepts candidates with no work experience because these masters degrees are specially designed for those who wish to switch fields and step into managerial level positions. Coming to your question, IE’s online assessment consists of three live questions, two in video format and one in written format.

The interview is mostly a skype one and could be taken by alumni or someone from the admission committee.

The interview usually covers your work, personal life, motivations for applying to the course and current affairs. In your case, I think you need to prepare thoroughly for this assessment because they might ask you about why you want to pursue a Masters in Finance at this point in your career. Also, since you have no relevant work experience, your answers must be well-framed and rock solid. The questions are usually profile, competency or goal based.

IE is one of the most overpriced schools in Europe. If you want my honest opinion, run. Do not accept their model, paying that price should only be allowed at LBS, LSE and Harvard (and even).
Anyway, shame on them to openly ask such prices. Plus, the selection of candidates is very dubious....
