Re: If 20 percent of the students at a certain school went to a camping tr [#permalink]

Students who went to a camping trip are divided in to 2 groups:
—> those who took more than $100 (25%)
—> those who did not take more than $100 ( 75%)

0.2 of all students went to a camping trip and took more than $100.

0.2= 25%
—> 100%= 0.8 of all students
The answer is D

.75*x = no of students did not take more than $100
so 25% or say 1/4 of students took >100$
.20 = x/4 = .8 or say 80%
IMO D

Let the number of students at the school = 100 and n = the number of students who went camping. Thus, 20 students went camping with more than $100, and 0.75n students went camping with no more than $100. Since this would mean that 0.25n students went camping with more than $100, we can create the equation:

0.25n = 20

n/4 = 20

n = 80

Since 80 is 80% of 100, 80% of the students at the school went camping.
