If all the cars in the US were powered by electric motors
instead of Gasoline engines, without any reduction in the number of
miles driven annually, then the total amount of fossil fuels consumed
in the US would be cut in half, despite the fact that most of the
electricity in the US is produced by burning the fossil fuels.
If the statement concerning the impact of electric cars on the
consumption of fossil fuels is true, which of the following
statements must be true?

a. Coal, natural gas, and oil burning electric power plants
together account for 50% of the fossil fuels consumed in the US.
b. Gasoline- powered cars account for more of the fossil fuels
consumed in the US than any other single method of consumption.
c. Electric cars result in less pollution to the environment
than any other method of transportation.
d. In terms of pound-miles per unit of energy, electric cars are
more efficient than any other form of transportation.
e. A complete switch-over from gasoline-powered to electric-
powered cars would result in no difference in the number of miles
driven annually in the US.

B, I'd guess.

If all cars were electric, "then the total amount of fossil fuels consumed
in the US would be cut in half".

b states that "Gasoline powered cars account for more of the fossil fuels
consumed in the US than any other single method of consumption"

Thanks, Paul.

At the end of last year, I was spending a lot of time on GMAT prep.
Early this year, I put a lot of time into my apps.
As I've wound down on the application process, I've been unmotivated to work because, God willing, I'll be out of here in August.

My employer suggested I consider resigning so they won't have to fire me.

I could either:
Let them fire me and collect unemployment, with a black mark on my U-4 (securities industry record)
Or resign with a clean record and be dirt poor.

I couldn't risk a mark on my U4, so I put in my two weeks notice, and I'm allowed to goof off as much as I'd like now. Of course, I'll be totally unemployed in 9 business days, but, what the hell...

It can be infered from Stoolfi's story that he will be spending much more time on GMATclub in the days, months and years to come

What we need to know is electric engine's fossil fuel consumption vis-a-vis other types of fossil fuel consumption methods (especially the fossil fuel consumed to produce those electric engines). Only then will we know whether fossil fuels consumed in the US would be cut in half by using electric engines. Whether or not electric cars are more efficient to any other form of transportation is besides the point. For instance, trains can be more efficient than electric cars but even knowing that, we cannot say whether electric engines(our only point of interest) will halve fossil fuel consumption.

The stem talks abot electric cars only and not about mass transportation. Once electric cars are introduced then more electricity is needed and more fossil fuels are burnt. If the efficiency of this car is same then nothing will improve. But this again depends on the assumption that 1 unit of gasoine is converted to i unit of electrical energy.

May be B is the best.

Id also go with B on this one. Most of the energy produced, and consumption cut in half. Those two statements lead me to believe that no other method can generate consumption of 50%

Ans is B: This is the only logical link as it cuts down the fossil
fuel consumption by half(Say If the Total consumption of fossil fuel
is 80% for electricity generation and for cars, then if cars are
electricity generation will drop to 40% and it does not mean Coal,
natural gas, and oil burning electric power plants together account for 50% of the fossil fuels consumed in the US)

I think B is the most appropriate answer here
