If all the cars in the US were powered by electric motors instead of Gasoline engines, without any reduction in the number of miles driven annually, then the total amount of fossil fuels consumed in the US would be cut in half, despite the fact that most of the electricity in the US is produced by burning the fossil fuels.

If the statement concerning the impact of electric cars on the consumption of fossil fuels is true, which of the following statements must be true?

A. Coal, natural gas, and oil burning electric power plants together account for 50% of the fossil fuels consumed in the US.
B. Gasoline- powered cars account for more of the fossil fuels consumed in the US than any other single method of consumption.
C. Electric cars result in less pollution to the environment than any other method of transportation.
D. In terms of pound-miles per unit of energy, electric cars are more efficient than any other form of transportation.
E. A complete switch-over from gasoline-powered to electric-powered cars would result in no difference in the number of milesdriven annually in the US.

How can the answer be B, when we don't know anything about the fossil fuel consumption of any other single method of consumption.
C, D are out because we cannot say anything about 'any other form of transportation.'
A is a weak possibility
E seems to be the cleanest of all

'half' is the key.
when gasoline-cars are replaced by ele-cars, total energy reduced is half, which means gasoline-cars burn more than half of the energy. That is to say, no other kind of cars burn more energy than gasoline-cars.

use math: gasoline-cars burn 70% of energy, ele-cars burn 20% of energy. When ele-cars replace gasoline-cars, 50% or half of energy will be cut. You can see, gasoline-cars are the biggest energy consumer. B is correct.
