$$average=\frac{22.5 \ miles}{1 \ gallon}=\frac{22.5*1.6 \ kilometers}{3.8 \ liters}=\frac{36}{3.8}\approx{9.5}$$ (22.5*1.6 is ~40 and 3.8 is ~4 so the result must be ~10).

22.5 miles is 22.5 x 1.6 = 36 km.

1 gallon is 3.8 liters.

So the approximate rate, in km/liter, is 36/3.8 = 9.473.

22.5*1.6/3.8
~9.5
